Creating the Perfect Quote Sandwich

As Graff and Birkenstein explain the “quotation sandwich” on page 46 of TSIS, “the introductory or lead-in claims should explain who is speaking and set up what the quotation says; the follow-up statements should explain why you consider the quotation to be important and what you take it to say.” Examples: Notice the punctuation in each! Introduction According to Zinczenko, or Zincenko argues,

Quote “. . . most of the teenagers who live, as I once did, on a fast-food diet won’t turn their lives around” (196).

Explanation His point is that it is extremely difficult to change behavior begun at an early age.

Quote “Drive down any thoroughfare in America, and I guarantee you’ll see one of our country’s more than 13,000 McDonald’s restaurants” (196).

Explanation With this fact he demonstrates what we have to concede is true; fast-food restaurants are everywhere, and American teenagers are likely to eat at them.

(use a comma before a quote when the introductory information does not make a complete sentence—an introductory phrase) According to Zinczenko, “. . . most of the teenagers who live, as I once did, on a fast-food diet won’t turn their lives around” (196). His point is that it is extremely difficult to change behavior begun at an early age. Introduction Moreover, Zinczenko shows why it is not easy for teenagers to resist the temptation of eating unhealthy meals:

(use a colon before a quote when the introductory information makes a complete sentence—an introductory independent clause) Moreover, Zinczenko shows why it is not easy for teenagers to resist the temptation of eating unhealthy meals: “Drive down any thoroughfare in America, and I guarantee you’ll see one of our country’s more than 13,000 McDonald’s restaurants” (196). With this fact he demonstrates what we have to concede is true; fast-food restaurants are everywhere, and American teenagers are likely to eat at them.

Of course, since the articles you are citing don’t have page numbers, the punctuation at the end of the quote will go INSIDE the quotation marks. Practice: Find three quotes that you used in your Rhetorical Analysis Essay and fill in the chart below to make sure that you have thoroughly introduced and explained each. Introduction Johnson claims that there is ongoing effort to reduce the amount of plastic and label used in bottled water.

Quote “Ice Mountain produced 30 percent less plastic and saved nearly 20 million pounds of paper since 1998”

Explanation With this fact she demonstrates, what she claims becomes obvious: bottled water is harmful to the environment and human beings on earth.

Introduction The author claims that bottled water destroys the animal habitat, especially the ocean.

Quote “eight out of 10 bottles will end up in a landfill”

Explanation The marine mammals and the other animals mistake the bottles as prey, which cause them serious illness, injury, or death.
