Description

The Chrysalids Quotes “This isn’t a cosy world for anyone - especially not for anyone that’s different. Maybe you’re not the kind to survive it after all.” Chapter 10, page 96, line 17-18 (Uncle Axel to David) As Anne neglects to acknowledge the monumental turmoil she could burden and jeopardize the group with by accepting Alan’s proposal, she contends that there lies an uneven quantity of boys and girls in the group, and hence two girls would be sidelined. David discloses to Uncle Axel that Anne bears telepathic ability, anxious about the plausibility of her forsaking the group and ultimately confiding in Alan, who formerly reported Sophie for her Offence, about their abnormalities. Uncle Axel recounts a tale in which a group of sailors sacrificed one life in exchange for having enough rations for the rest of them to survive; as David promptly catches his implication, he expresses his unwillingness to compromise Anne’s death. Discerning the gravity of the situation and the peril it could put the group in, Uncle Axel lectures David that the world isn’t a utopia; doing what’s necessary to survive doesn’t always align with your morals. Sometimes doing what’s best for the majority can seem inhumane, but human instinct is doing what you have to, not what you want to. Not persuaded, or influenced at all, by his advice, David says that he’d rather be killed than having anything to do with Anne’s death. In our society today, supposing that you hold the power to decide someone’s fate for them seems to be a common practice. Assassinating Anne would almost bear similarities to the death penalty: assuming that those convicted of crimes are incapable of change and revoking their odds of ever rejoining a community. There is no real evidence that Anne would ever expose the group’s secrets; it’s a hypothesis. The death penalty puts innocent lives at risks; every year, new evidence arises proving those previously deemed guilty innocent. Imagine conducting the execution of a man, deemed guilty of a series of first degree murder charges. As soon as his heart beat stops, the medical examiner rushes in and labels the death a suicide. There is always the possibility of releasing someone from their cell, but not their grave. David and the group can examine other, better alternatives before making such a rushed decision. Life without parole is a much better option than capital punishment. The death penalty is an antiquated, unusual, and cruel punishment; considering our advances in technology, education, and sciences, we have proven ourselves capable of utilizing civil techniques of punishment and rehabilitation. Waknuk perceives itself as a utopia, free of all abnormalities and approved by God, but what is it really? A society that does not embrace diversity, and thus the theme of the novel is discrimination. You have to have X and remain Y while doing Z. Everything is formulated. Difference is not promoted; it’s killed out....
