Julian Alexander “Panic Defense” Mohabatullah Mohammedi 501035190 Dr. Sanjay Sandhu Introduction: Does Biosocial conditions explain why a homosexual was murdered? A Biosocial condition like Physiological factors include subcategories such as assertive behaviorism, which provides a strong explanation why an impulsive murder was committed. Assertive behaviorism are major disorders that include and lead to panic attacks, depression, and impulsive decisions which delivers a persuasive explanation why Scott, a homosexual was murdered. “In 1995, two men filmed an episode of daytime talk show, The Jenny Jones Show. A few days later, one of the men was dead. The shooter “John” later claimed he’d committed the murder “In a panic that he was being falsely accused or identified as a gay person.” (CRIMINAL, Julienne Alexander). Biosocial theory provides a strong explanation of the murder of Scott Amedure in episode 129 of the CRIMINAL PODCAST because it accounts for the phycological factors that John Smidt faced like assertive Behaviorism such as diminished capacity, depression.

Following the introduction, I am going to provide a detailed summary of the Murder committed by John. I will than outline a detailed view of biosocial theory and how it relates and justifies the murder of Scott through logic and evidence. In addition, I will state some imperfections of Biosocial theory and factors on how other theories also provide an explanation of this murder. Finally, I will conclude with an overview of why Biosocial theory is a strong explanation of John’s murder.

Julian Alexander “Panic Defense” Summary: The criminal podcast show I chose is “Panic Defense” by Julienne Alexander, episode 129. Biosocial theory explains this episode well because it accounts for a side of the biological and sociological factors of the criminal. Within the biological factors, the physiological aspects explain diminished capacity as a behaviorism illness, which John was facing. (What does biological aspects include? What does physiological aspects include? What area they) It was in a daylight show when 32-year-old Scott was asked about his love and fantasies towards John as he was backstage. However, John was unaware that Scott had a crush on him and suddenly felt embarrassed when it was addressed to him on national television. “John put his hands over his face” (Panic defense, 2:30). Later that night Scott left a note on John’s door, “If u really want to get it off, I’m the one with the right tool” (Panic Defense, 2:50), however, John was not unsure of who left this message, which quite upset him. John than purchased a shotgun and asked Scott if he left the note which he admitted to. Likewise, John killed Scott by shooting him twice in the chest, fled the scene and then informed the cops that he has killed Scott because he was a homosexual and embarrassed him on national TV. John was initially charged with first degree murder however, his internee argued that he was suffering from “diminished capacity”. This is because he was dealing with depression and he felt humiliated on the Jenny Johns show when Scott confessed his crush. The jury found this persuasive and lowered the charges to second degree murder as his actions were impulsive. John was sentenced to 25-50 years in prison however, he was released on parole in 2017 after 20 years. (how the theory explains why the charges were lowered/ excused?)
