Cruise Terminology AFT – Towards the rear of the ship (also called the stern) Amidships – Toward the centre of the ship Berth – bed in a cabin Bow “baw” – Front of the ship (also called forward) Bridge – Navigation and command centre of the ship Cabin – Cruise ship accommodation (stateroom) Captain – First in command of the ship CLIA (Cruise Lines International Asociation) – Association dedicated to the promotion and growth of the cruise industry Debarkation (disembarkation) – An act of getting OFF the ship Deck – The different floors (levels) of the ship Embarkation – Getting on the ship-like checking in to a hotel Flag of Convenience – country of registry Forward – Towards the bow (front of the ship) Inside Cabin – Cabin with no exterior window-ca be atrium view Knot – Unit of Speed=1 nautical mile per hour Magrodome – Retractable roof, usually over the pool Nautical Mile – Equals to 1.15 miles or 1.85 km Pitch/ Roll (side to side way of ship) – Rise and fall of bow/alt of ship Port – Where a boat/ship dock/ left side of the ship Port Hole – This is a generally circular window used on the hull of ships to admit light Port of Call – Destination where the ship stops Port Tay – Fees levied by each port or city charged to passenger with final payment Registry - Country where ship is registered Repositioning Cruise – Moving a ship from one geographical area to another based on seasonality Stabilizer – Right side of the ship (when facing forward) Stateroom – A cabin or accommodation on the ship Stern – AFT or back of the ship
