Part Ia – Analysing a previously unseen research abstract | short phrase answers An example abstract is provided for you within the documents in this Flow, labelled in the format ‘Example abstract [number].pdf’ Please enter the unique abstract ID for your abstract on your question paper before answering the questions below. Thinking about the research described in this abstract answer the following questions:

Question 1: Based on the definitions of HCI contribution types provided by Wobbrock and Kientz (2016) which one of the following options best describes the contribution(s) of the research described in the example abstract? • • • • • • • • •

Empirical research contribution Artefact research contribution Methodological contribution Theoretical contribution Survey contribution Dataset contribution Empirical and artefact contribution Artefact and methodological contribution Theoretical and survey contribution

Question 2: Using the descriptions in the course textbook (Lazar et al., 2017) as a guide, which of the following research methods best describes the research described in the example abstract: • • • • • •

Experiment Survey Ethnography Interview Focus group Diary study

Question 3: Is the research described in the example abstract: qualitative, quantitative or mixed?

Part Ib - Analysing the previously seen case studies | short paragraph answer Question 4: Define two relevant beneficiary groups for the research described in Robertson et al.’s (2015) paper and describe how each group might benefit from the research reported in the paper.

[Part II of the exam continues on the next page – complete Part I before attempting Part II] 3

Part II - Demonstrating depth of understanding | longer answers

Question 5: What are the pros and cons of using focus groups to investigate user preferences for a novel conversational user interface?

Question 6: The description of the method, procedure and results in the study by Robertson et al. (2015) omits many details that are important for judging the rigour of the research that was conducted. List all the major omissions and explain how these are relevant to the assessment of research quality.

Question 7: Considering the research described in Zhang and Bickmore’s (2018) study: i. ii. iii.

Explain why the research described is not a true experiment. What are the implications of the quasi-experimental design used in this study for internal validity? Given your discussion in 7i and 7ii above, do you think that the claims made by the authors about the implications of their findings are appropriate? Explain your reasoning, and if you believe that some, or all, of the claims are not appropriate, what would it be appropriate to conclude from this study given the method used?

[Part III of the exam continues on the next page – complete Part II before attempting Part III]

Part III – Applying knowledge to a new problem | longer answers

Question 8: Choose either of the case study examples (Robertson et al., 2015, or Zhang and Bickmore, 2018) and design a controlled experiment to test the conclusions of the paper. Your answer should clearly identify the following: i. ii. iii. iv. v. vi. vii.

The hypotheses that will be tested in the experiment The sample size and justification for this choice The sample inclusion and exclusion criteria and justification for this choice The independent variable(s) in the experiment The dependent variables in the experiment The possible extraneous variables and how these will be controlled The appropriate statistical test to test the hypotheses defined for your design

Question 9: Discuss how anthropomorphic user interface may impact on user behaviour with, and experience of, a conversational agent. Where you draw upon relevant theories and findings from the literature, sources should be referenced.
