2 Cultural Self- Assessment I believe that my values and beliefs, as they pertain to diversity, were formulated early in my life. My parents taught me from a young age that everyone is equal regardless of their race, culture, or religion. These values were furthered enforced through my participation in church and youth group.

As a nurse and someone who works in the healthcare profession, I am exposed to many different races, ethnic groups, cultures, religions, and social backgrounds every single day. I treat all of my patients with respect for their culture as much as I understand it. In the event that I do not understand something about my patients’ culture or religion, I take the time to ask them or access the resources I have to competently care for that patient. I think it is extremely important that we take the time to become culturally competent so we can provide specific care for each patient we encounter. This builds a good relationship and gains the trust of your patient.

As someone who grew up in church, I am very strong in my Christian faith. In fact, I come from a family who are all very strong in their faith and Christian beliefs. As much as I love talking about the faith my parents instilled in me from a very young age, I never impose my beliefs and values on my patients or their family members. In the society we live in today, religion can be a very touchy subject. However, I work in a hospital that keeps the three-fold ministry of Christ—Healing, Preaching, and Teaching as their mission. So, when given the chance, I never miss the opportunity to pray with a patient or family member or lead someone to Christ.

3 Cultural Self- Assessment In a world and society that is ever-changing, the GLBTQ population is rapidly growing. As someone who grew up in a strict, Christian home, I do not believe or support these practices at all. However, as a healthcare provider, it is my duty to put my personal feelings and beliefs aside and offer care to those who are in need. Not only is it my job to render care, it is also my job to render, respectful and compassionate care to everyone.

Communication is huge in the healthcare field. Not only do nurses have to communicate with their patients and family members, they also have to communicate with doctors and other members of the multiple disciplinary team. In a community that is vastly diverse, there are many non-English speaking patients and families. With this being the case, it is very important to understand that their foreign accent and limited English skill is not a reflection of their intellectual capacity or their ability to communicate clearly.

Our population is very diverse with so many different religions, cultures, heritages, social backgrounds, races, and ethnic groups. As healthcare providers we must be as culturally competent as possible so we can provide equal and respectful care to all of our patients. In the event we are unsure or do not know something about a particular patient or cultural group, we should reach out to someone, research, or access the resources provided by our employed to further our knowledge. This allows us to provide the best care possible. We should make everyone feel accepted and celebrate our differences....
