Essay about Cultural Diversity...

Description

Culture is what shapes our identity and influences our behavior. More specifically, it refers to the shared language, beliefs, values and customs that are passed down from one generation to another. Cultural diversity, more often than not, coexists with multiculturalism and they both have the same connotation. Multiculturalism is a word that describes a society where many different cultures live together. Cultural diversity supports the idea that every person can make a positive contribution to the society because of, rather than in spite of, their differences. Cultural diversity is important because, even though we tend to fear what is unknown to us, we can learn from one another. Learning about other cultures helps us understand, recognize and respect “ways of being” that are not necessarily our own. Furthermore, this diversity makes our country a more interesting place to live, because of their languages, customs and different experiences and way of thinking. In many ways, diversity is a major advantage to an industrialized society. Diversity gives us a possibility to grow. It gives us many different perspectives to solve problems, it adds variety to life and, in a sort of way, gives us more options (food, music, …) An example of it are global artists BTS, the current biggest boy band in the world. What makes BTS special is that, while they’ve reached the international spotlight, rather than adapting to western styles, the boys have made an effort to share Korean culture through their music and visuals, which is very remarkable. Bts have played a significant role in changing the perception of Korea around the world. In order to fully understand BTS’s references to Korea, many fans around the world start learning the Korean language and watching Korean dramas. They also have a big effect on Korea’s tourism. This not only shows how music transcends language, but also how bts bring together fans from all corners of the world, people of all ages, cultures and customs, encouraging this diversity. As Kim Namjoon (the leader of the group) said in their UN speech: ‘’No matter who you are, where you’re from, your skin colour, your gender identity: speak yourself. Find your name, find your voice by speaking yourself.’’ However, this doesn’t mean that diversity comes without difficulties. Among the most noticeable disadvantages of cultural diversity include language barriers, racism, prejudices and eventual conflicts between cultures. These are not reasons to avoid diversity, but rather, factors to keep in mind as society works his way towards a more diverse future.

We need to remember that this kind of harmony was not an easy task. There are still places around the world where cultural diversity is not accepted, where people die every day because of their differences. There is still so much more we can do to make this world a better place for everyone. We have fought and we still need to fight for a world where diversity means ‘’added value’’ and not ‘’discrimination’’....
