Week Two Overview College Writing II Professor Darrin Berard

Hello. Welcome to College Writing II at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. I am thrilled to be able to work with you. While we won’t meet in person this semester, I expect that our virtual sessions will be engaging and rewarding. I plan to send you a weekly overview generally by the Sunday afternoon prior to the week. Please log into Zoom by our designated class meeting time each day. Don’t hesitate to ask questions if you have them. You can reach me by email at [email protected]. Homework Due 2/2 : There are two homework assignments, which must be completed and submitted before our class meeting time. 1.) Please complete Exercise 2, starting on page 12 in The Curious Researcher. The exercise asks you to reflect on Ballenger’s research essay, “Theories of Intelligence.” Follow the directions in the textbook. Submit your response on Blackboard. 2.) Read “Agents With Faces” and answer the five reading questions. Submit your responses to the questions on Blackboard. On Tuesday, 2/2: We will begin with a Quick Write about play research. Then we will review the Lego Minifigure article as well as Exercise 2 in breakout rooms. Groups will report out in the main session. After, we’ll watch a TED talk called “The Power of Questions.” We will wrap up with a review of next steps, including an exit ticket and homework assignment.

Homework Due 2/4: There are two homework assignments: 1.) Examine the image of the two pennies (or find two pennies wherever you are). Practice developing questions using the chart on page 35 in The Curious Researcher. Develop a question for each area listed on the chart. 2.) Find a small object where you live to use during an activity next class. On Thursday 2/4: We will begin with a Quick Write on a quote from about supposedly “boring subjects.” We will conduct an object activity. We’ll convene in breakout sessions to share your findings. Each group will share the best question developed during the Object Activity. We’ll preview Paper #4. Finally, we’ll review Narrative Notes and the homework assignment for our next class meeting. Homework Due 2/9: Type Narrative Notes for Chapter 1: Week 1 in The Curious Researcher a  nd submit them to Blackboard before our class meeting time....
