Log Entry #1. Directions: Summarize the meaning and purpose of Guillaume Machaut’s lyrics for “Ma fin est mon commencement” (2 sentences). What are two identifying characteristics of this piece and how are these characteristics illustrated in the video (1 sentence)? What specific directions are given to the performers in the lyrics to help them solve the canon’s puzzle (1 sentence)? What is a rondeau and for what characteristics of a rondeau is “Ma fin est mon commencement” a typical and/or atypical example (2-3 sentences)?

Your Log Entry: The purpose of the meaning and purpose of Guillaume Machaut’s for “Ma fin est mon commencement” there is no end to his or her heart. An example in the lyrics that prove this is when it says, “My end is my beginning, and my beginning is my end, and throughout I hold true at heart.” One characteristic that is shown in the video is the first two lines of the poem are repeated as the final two lines, such as in (0:003:11) and another characteristic the cantus voice is the Triplum voice sung backward in (0:00-3:11). The text is the key to a musical puzzle, giving performance directions to the musicians so that they can perform the piece. What is typical for “Ma fin est mon commencement” the first two lines of the poem are repeated as the final two lines. Atypical about this piece is having 8 lines, but a usual piece has a length of 10 – 15 lines.

Log Entry #2. Directions: “Greensleeves” and “Tant m’abelis” are both examples of troubadour/minstrel music from the Medieval period. Using the video link above and the relevant class Powerpoints, list and describe the instruments used in these performances (2 sentences). Summarize and then compare and contrast the lyrics for these two pieces (2 sentences). Explain the metaphors and double meanings in the lyrics (1 sentence). In what ways are the lyrics typical or atypical of a troubadour song (1 sentence)?

Your Log Entry: The instruments that are used in “Greensleeves” is the harp, lute, a chest of viols, recorders and bowed psaltery and how the instruments were used in the performances was a calm tone as well as developing a sense of the medieval period from melody heard from the instruments and then for the instruments in “Tant m’abelis” that is used are soprano, Counter-tenor, rebab, flute, and lute tambourine. The

instruments that are used make a fast tempo, and listening to the melody reminds me of being in Egypt. Both lyrics from “Greensleeves” and “Tant m’abelis” talk about love in the performances of the two pieces. The difference between the two lyrics is that “Greensleeves” talks about losing love, but “Tant m’abelis” talks about having love. The double meanings in “Greensleeves” tells the audience he’s talking about his wife and for the metaphors in “Tant m’ableis” mean that the wife to him is like a god. Typical, the texts were intellectual (rational) and metaphorical (people, events, and objects represented in other ways, such as a brave person appearing as a lion in the story.

Log Entry #3. Directions: Compare and contrast the pieces “Ave Maria” and “Saltarello.” Include time counter (00:00 - 00:00) references from the video links above that illustrate at least four of the points you present in your analysis: that is, if the reader consults the video at the time you indicate, what they hear clearly supports your statement. Do not include any introductory or concluding sentences in your entry; assume the person reading your analysis is familiar with these pieces.

Your Log Entry: For the piece “Saltarello,” it has instruments playing, such as the flute mostly heard from (0:00 – 0:16). But in the piece “Ave Maria,” it does not include instruments in the piece, but instead, it has a choir in (0:00 – 0:23). Another difference from the two pieces is the tempo because in “Saltarello,” it has a faster tempo in (0:20 – 0:40) than the piece “Ave Maria” that has a slow tempo from (0:23 – 0:40). The notes that are played in the piece in “Saltarello” have high notes playing from the instruments from (0:44 – 0:55). But the piece from “Ave Maria” plays low notes from (0:45 – 1:00) that is played by the choir for this piece. The similarity between “Ave Maria” and “Saltarello” there is a lead for both pieces. Such as in the choir, there a voice that is heard from the rest in (0:00 – 0:23). There is a flute heard more than the other instruments in (0:00 – 0:25).
