The lowest gear we ever ride at is a 3. The gears can go up to 20, but refrain from calling out a gear number that high, as most riders cannot do it and it leads itself to compromised form. When you have heavier hills, 45-55 rpm, you can cue 12+ gear and give them the option to add more if they need it....
