Debate Online Dating Services

There are a multitude of online dating services that are available to society nowadays. EMBO Reports states that “with the rise of the internet and profound changes in contemporary lifestyles, online dating has gained enormous popularity among aspiring lovers of all ages” (2010). As online dating is becoming more common in today’s society, it is essential for this generation to understand the cons of online dating. According to Pew Research Center, “roughly half of women think dating sites or apps are an unsafe way to meet people” (2020). Although dating services match individuals based on compatibility, it is not reliable because people often tend to lie about their identity on their profiles. It is easy for an individual to lie about their appearance, or who they are in general, and the newer generation typically refers to these people displaying fake personas as “catfish”. You never truly know if someone online is who they say they are. Although online dating services are known for matching individuals with other individuals who they have never met before, this can be dangerous because the individual is being matched to a total stranger of whom they do not know their intentions. It is also hard to know if two individuals are truly a match if their relationship is based online rather than in-

person. Lastly, online dating services provide an individual with plenty of options to choose from. Although this might not seem like a downside, having so many options to choose from can be exhausting after a while. The large quantity of individuals to choose from also might make it hard for one individual to want to stay committed to another individual. According to Clinton Powers, “there are so many choices in online dating that it’s hard to commit to one person” (2018). Although it is much easier to find a partner online, the chances of finding a compatible partner, as well as having a relationship that will last longer, are much better in the real world. Also, the chances of finding a partner online are much higher if the individual using the online dating service is young.
