3. Why doesn’t the Deming Chain Reaction terminate with “Increased Profits”? Would this contradict the basis of Deming’s philosophy? The Deming Chain Reaction does not terminate with increased profits because it would basically imply a short-term perspective instead of a long-term survival focus of the business. The increased profits might suggest lowering quality to lower costs and increase profits in the short-term as opposed to the longer term goal of improving quality to maintain customer loyalty and ensure long-term survival. Yes, it would contradict the basis of Deming’s philosophy being that increased profits suggest a benefit primarily to leadership or management as opposed to sharing the benefits of improved quality across all levels of the organization.

5. Describe a process with which you are familiar. List some factors that contribute to common cause variation. Cite some examples of special causes of variation in this process. A process that I am familiar with is getting a haircut. Some factors that contribute to common causes of variation are the lack of proper clippers/razors. A few others are having a cape over your body to protect, tissue around the neck, and how the barber holds the tools. Some examples of special causes of getting a haircut are clipper malfunctions, power outages, and improper hair care products.

12. Summarize Juran’s philosophy. How is it similar to and different from Deming’s? Juran’s philosophy views that the mission of the firm as a whole is to achieve high product quality and that the mission of each department is to achieve high production quality.

Juran focuses on three levels of quality known as Juran’s trilogy which is; quality planning to meet quality goals, quality control or the process of measuring and meeting quality goals, and quality improvement or brewing through new levels of performance. Juran’s philosophy is different in that he believes that management and workers speak different languages whereas Deming sees them as being more unified and speaking with the same goals in mind. However, Juran’s philosophy is similar to Deming’s in that all levels’ mission is to achieve high quality.

16. Summarize the Crosby philosophy. How does it differ from Deming and Juran? To look at the big picture of Crobsy’s philosophy, “doing it right the first time” is the main focus in his principle. One of the absolutes of management goes to say “quality means to conformance of requirements not elegance. This means that it is management’s responsibility to set requirements very clearly, as it could be an issue pertaining to the requirements set by management. Making sure you work on a project efficiently the first attempt is essential in conquering zero defects. Crosby includes includes commitment by management, education, and implementation similar to Juran and Deming’s philosophies. Deming’s chain reaction is similar to Crosby’s absolute because there is no such thing as the economics of quality. Juran and Deming’s philosophy would differ because they would imply that perfection is too high of a standard to hold line workers up to and would cause more negativity in the work process. Common causes and other imperfections are usually caused by problems that team members are not held accountable for....
