DENVER DEVELOPMENT SCREENING PROJECT 2 The Denver Developmental Screening Test (DDST) was created in 1967 and a revised version, the Denver II, was released in 1992 to provide needed improvements. The purpose of the tests is to identify young children with developmental problems so that they can be referred for help. It provides a simple method of screening for evidences of slow development in infants and preschool children (ages birth to 6 years). The test covers four functions: gross motor, language, fine motor-adaptive, and personal-social (Doctor Guidelines, 2020). It has been standardized on 1,036 presumably normal children whose families reflected the occupational and ethnic characteristics of the population of Denver, Colorado. This screening can be used at any community health center, outpatient/family pediatric office, & early education programs. The subject of this screening was a 23-month-old Caucasian male. He is the youngest of 2 children, with a 7-year-old sister, and 2 parents, all living in a single-story owned home in Brevard County, FL. He is currently not enrolled in daycare due to the COVID-19 pandemic, even though some of the daycares have reopened, because the parents are afraid it is too soon to expose him to other families, so young, especially with COVID cases rising again. On the day of the screening, the subject woke up per his usual time, and fussed over finishing his morning meal (as per his usual according to his mother). The child is advance in the function of language, in particular the matters of “use of 2 objects” and “know 4 actions”, which should begin developing at 24 months and around 31 months respectively (Doctor Guidelines, 2020). The screening process went smooth for the most part, the child got distracted at some parts, but the mother was able to assist at helping the child focus at the task at hand without guiding the child. Also, if I was using words that perhaps the child did not understand, she would guide me in hers and her husband’s verbiage for him. What I can honestly say I take away from

DENVER DEVELOPMENT SCREENING PROJECT 3 this experience is, I have a deeper understanding and respect for those health care professionals in the pediatric field. I also said the same thing to my mother when my first child was born, as she said I would by always saying “you’ll understand one day when you have kids of your own” when I was much younger”, and now I of course do. And, I of course repeat my sentiment of that I do not want to work in pediatrics! On the question of whether the results would be any different had I administered this screening in 1950, I would have to say yes based on the assumption that we know far more into the psyche of children and the growth and development from birth to age 6 years.
