This short summary of the book Demian by Hermann Hesse was for my composition class....

Description

Hermann Hesse’s Demian Don’t judge a book by its cover or so they say. Turquoise cover with the capital D on it. The D looks like the devil and angel merged together. Would you pick up a book with a cover like that? The book Demian is the work of a German writer Hermann Hesse. The story takes place in Germany, the decade before the First World War. It has a narrative point of view, so you see the world through the eyes of one of the main characters, which in this case is Emil Sinclair. This book gives you an insight into Emil’s journey into the depth of his soul, to find himself. Another main character, Demian, steps in when Sinclair goes to school. He has had a huge impact on him, he encourages Emil to open a door and introduces him to distinctive thinking, this leads our main character to self-discovery. Through this journey, Sinclair meets various people who help and lead him towards his true-self. The story ends during the First World War, where Emil has been wounded. This book talks about a variety of feelings hidden deep inside one’s mind. Seeing both “the world of light” and „the forbidden realm” brings me, as a reader, to a conclusion with the main character´s feelings. The former of these realms represents the good in life, such as innocence, purity of mind. The latter of the realms shows sin, deceit, loneliness, and disgust. Our main character Sinclair grew up in “the world of light”, so being exposed to the second so-called “forbidden realms” quite a big deal for him. Both worlds merge where one is incomplete without the other. This describes us in everyday life, where we´re being confronted with all those good and bad things and are left to deal with them in one way or another. Demian being one of my all-time favourites gives me, indeed, a sense of self-realization with quotes such as “Sooner or later each of us must take the step that separates him from his father, from his mentors; each of us must have some cruelly lonely experience – even if most people cannot take much of this and soon crawl back”. Books with an astonishing story and emotional value such as this one will be stuck in your head for weeks and with no doubt will change your thinking in some way. Hesse is a wonderful writer that has this effect on his readers....
