Description

DIAGNOSTIC ESSAY THE RHETORICAL SITUATION The college experience is one that may be new to you. College life brings many wonderful new experiences and it is a place that will offer you many opportunities to grow and flourish into a productive member of the community. You will make friends that will last a lifetime and gain experiences that are unique to this context. College life also entails new responsibilities and challenges. Academic integrity essentially means "intellectual honesty": honesty in the use of information, in formulating arguments, and in other activities related to the pursuit of knowledge and understanding. It is a core principle that underpins how we live and learn in a community of inquiry. As members of an academic community, we are entitled to a wide degree of freedom in the pursuit of scholarly interests. With that freedom, however, comes the responsibility to uphold the high ethical standards of academic conduct1. Academic integrity means honesty and responsibility in scholarship. Students and faculty alike must obey rules of honest scholarship, which means that all academic work should result from an individual's own efforts. Intellectual contributions from others must be consistently and responsibly acknowledged. Academic work completed in any other way is fraudulent2. As a UT Arlington student, you are expected to adhere to the university Honor Code which states: I pledge, on my honor, to uphold UT Arlington’s tradition of academic integrity, a tradition that values hard work and honest effort in the pursuit of academic excellence. I promise that I will submit only work that I personally create or contribute to group collaborations, and I will appropriately reference any work from other sources. I will follow the highest standards of integrity and uphold the spirit of the Honor Code. PURPOSE The purpose of this essay is twofold. First, this diagnostic essay will serve as a tool for the professor or instructor to assess the writing abilities of the students in order to make adjustments to the course schedule in order to better meet the needs of the students. This essay will also serve as a tool that will foster a sense of personal responsibility within the university environment. ASSIGNMENT Write a 400-500 word essay addressed to me and your classmates where you discuss how the Honor Code should be upheld at both the individual and community level. Also, discuss the benefits and drawbacks of implementing such a system at UT Arlington. Do not limit yourself to discussing examples and scenarios that take place within the Composition classroom. You must examine at least two areas of study such as English, Mathematics and the Sciences while discussing the implications of the Honor Code. 1 http://www.american.edu/academics/integrity/ 2 http:// http://www.library.illinois.edu/learn/research/academicintegrity.html#def...
