Description

Kendra Slade is a 16-year-old patient who presents to the pediatric neurology clinic for a followup visit. Kendra has a 10-year history of epilepsy, which is well controlled with medications. Kendra’s last seizure was three years ago, and she regularly adheres to her medication regimen. Kendra asks the nurse, “Can I get my driver’s license? All of my friends are getting their driver’s license, but I’ve heard that people with epilepsy can’t drive. I’m going to be so bummed out if I can’t drive like the rest of my friends.” 1. What impact do peers have on adolescents? 2. What should the nurse say to Kendra about getting her driver’s license? 3. What other safety points should the nurse emphasize with Kendra at this time? You are to answer two of the questions and respond to one classmate

1. What impact do peers have on adolescents? Peer relationships can really influence an adolescent, the peer relationship can contribute to the development of the adolescent. It can be a positive or negative influence, A positive peer relationship influence can be associated with being more engaged in school, getting good grades, as well as applying to college. it can cause the adolescent to make risky decisions such as experimenting with substances, consuming alcohol, driving recklessly and smoking. Since attitudes and behaviors are influenced by peers, adolescents are trying to be more independent and have a desire to form their identity. 2. What should the nurse say to Kendra about getting her driver’s license? The nurse should let Kendra know that every state has a different diver’s license eligibility for people with medical conditions such as epilepsy. She should also let her know that she should not take any medications that make her drowsy if she knows she will be driving. It is also important for the nurse to remind Kendra she should continue to adhere to her medication regimen to be eligible to get a drivers license. Remaining seizure free for a period of time is an important requirement to be eligible for a driver’s license. Another requirement is for the physician to evaluate the ability to drive safely. Kenda’s last seizure was three years ago it seems she will be able to receive her drivers license like her friends.
