This checklist is a joint project of Seattle Parks and Recreation and the Seattle Audubon Society. This latest edition of the checklist is based on information obtained from monthly census data from Seattle Audubon, extensive bird tours and over thirty-five years of citizens reporting bird sightings. The list was compiled by Discovery Park Naturalists and David Hutchinson. We would like in particular to thank Dan Harville, Kathy & Arn Slettebak, and Neil & Carleen Zimmerman for their contribution to this project

The species names and taxonomic order in this checklist are based on the American Ornithologist’s Union Check-list of North American Birds, Seventh Edition. Checklist design by Adam Sedgley, Seattle Audubon.

Welcome to Discovery Park, Seattle’s premier birding “hot spot”. This park on the shores of Puget Sound, is comprised of 550 acres of mixed woodlands, meadows, rocky and sandy beaches as well as fresh water habitats. The diversity of habitats creates a location of regional importance for the public to encounter over 270 species of birds. The o hosts m throated and Rhin gull use Jaegers in fall. Savannah and White-crowned Sparrows nest in the South Meadows (4), and winter brings Fox, Lincoln, and Golden-crowned Sparrows as well. Look for Barn Owls patroling for rodents at dusk. Enjoy birding in the park and remember to be respectful of all life so Discovery Park will remain a haven for birds and other wildlife for years to come.
