Discussion: The revelation of humans being descended from apes was ground breaking to early Victorian peoples. Darwin avoided talking about human evolution to avoid public outcry. In the 1880s the leading thought was that humans lived alongside apes. Early scientists were searching for a “missing link” that would make sense of this phenomenon. It was thought it was Neanderthals. The island of Java showed promise when the scientist was able to uncover some teeth that were ape-like. Shortly after, he found a skullcap. The skull ended up being much older than he expected to find. He calculated the size of the brain cavity, and it did not meet the expectation. He then found a leg bone that suggested that the “missing link” walked upright. He called this discovery “upright walking ape man”. Homo Erectus had brains about the ⅔ the size of ours, about 6 feet tall and they were able to catch and kill meat. Their stone tools showed the advancement of the species. They had a family system, allowing them to recover from injury. Homo Erectus was able to conquer the fear of fire, and became able to use it to their advantage. They were able to begin moving around the globe, which is why the skeleton was on Java. Raymond Dart was given a lump of solid rock that contained a skull from Africa. On Christmas Eve 1924, he was able to see the skull. It appeared to be a perfect mix of ape and human features

on the skull of a child. This is the Southern Ape of Africa, it was 2 million years old. It is thought the child died from an attack from an eagle....
