Knitting can be an exciting hobby to pursue. It is fun to pick up a couple of knitting needles, some yarn, and create something fantastic. Knitting can have some health benefits as well including relaxation, stress relief, focus, and creativity. It can also be used to enhance survival skills out in the wild as well as benefit wildlife. Knitting is a hobby that has some beneficial payoffs if you learn it. Knitting is when you take two pointed needles of various sizes and a strand of yarn and you start to pull a series of loops through each other to form a fabric. Using various techniques, you can achieve different shapes and textures of fabric that can be later pieced together to make something larger. “It can give you a sense of pride” (Harper, 2020) to create something from a basic building block like yarn. “The act of knitting has been proven through a survey that was conducted online to suggest many people believe it has therapeutic properties which can contribute to wellbeing and quality of life.” (Riley, Corkhill, & Morris, Febr) “Some say knitting can have the same benefits of meditation.” (Harper, 2020) Meditation can help reduce stress and increase your ability to focus because it can be soothing and calming. In fact, I worked a bit on a scarf while writing this essay which has helped me focus on the task at hand so that I could complete the assignment. Knitting can also help with pain management as the automatic pattern of rhythmic, repetitive movement can help the brain focus away from pain which helps bring your level of pain to a manageable level. I love being able to grab a couple of knitting needles and spend hours tossing yarn over them to create something wonderful. I have also found that it is a good way to create gifts for your loved ones and has saved me from worrying about buying last minutes gifts during holidays because I always have something somebody will enjoy.

Knitting with others whether attending a group session in person or collaborating with fellow knitters virtually online can be used as a tool to help overcome depression. This allows you to connect with others and discover new relationships with those who share a similar passion. Sharing the handmade items that were made by you with others can give you a sense of accomplishment and make you feel pride in what you have created. If knitting and making new creations make you happy, you are less likely to remain in a depressive state and will feel more compelled and excited to go out and meet with other people. Knitting can be a great skill to have if you’re out in the wild if you go camping or find yourself in a situation in which you need to trap wildlife or catch fish for survival. You can easily gather vines and other fibrous materials that can be used to knit a net. These nets can be used to set a trap for wildlife. You can also make a net used to catch fish from streams. When you need a place to relax, you can knit up a hammock and hang it between some trees. Commercially available nets and hammocks use knitting techniques to makes their products so there’s no reason to believe you could not do it at home. Learning to knit is easier than you might expect as there are only two basic stitches to master. From basic knitting to learning the advanced techniques, you will never be bored or finish learning new things. Because there are countless styles of knitting, different colors, and textures of yarn to use which makes the possibilities virtually endless. There are even online resources where you can find patterns or instructions in either written or video format that will show you step by step how to make something. Whether you learn to knit to help with depression, relieve stress, enhance survival skills in the wild, or you just want to relax on a camping trip you will find that this skill is incredibly valuable.
