A. Elementary School (Using Uno Cards to Engage in Fitness Activities Video #28)

In the video, there are nine boys and girls for the total of eighteen students. The children are in first grade and between the ages of six and seven. The class contains students with different abilities and needs which led the teacher to develop a unique lesson plan. There are two boys and two girls that have Title I Math and Reading. There is boy whom lives with a foster family; whom is also have therapy and counseling services outside of school. In the class, there are six boys and three girls that are in school provided speech and language services. One girl has been referred to their Child Study Team; a program that helps with developmental problems, behavioral and social-emotional problems. Even with all the unique abilities and needs the . children are excited and eager to move and participate in class In this special group of student there are different stages of development. Using the Piaget’s stage of cognitive development, the student seem to be in between pre-operational and concrete operational. Due the provided information, I believe the students are between ages of six and seven, the students are in concrete operational, the teacher does involve math in her lesson. Although early in the concrete operational stage, the children can be in still the preoperational stage. Ms. Millar is adding math into her lesson plan, in one of the stations the . students have to multiply the number on their card by two Ms. Millar has developed her lesson plan using humanistic theory, and constructivism theory. Using Uno game was creative and interesting, which allowed the students to be selfregulated and self-controlled. Ms. Millar gave instructions about the game with rules and expectations. She also asked the students to have self-integrity. Ms. Millar has constructivism theory in her lesson plan. She is giving clear instructions to the students. Each student must pick

up a card. The color determines the station the student has to attend. At the station, the students might have to some math to do, using the number that was on their card. Humanistic theory is student-centered. The students are encouraged to take control over their education. In the video, although students have go to the station in which the card they have picked up, the student gets . to choose which activity they will like within the station

B. Middle School (Clarifying Misconceptions about Photosynthesis and Respiration Video (#2533

In the video, groups of students are in sixth grade between ages of eleven and twelve. In this video the group contained 22 students, a mix of eight boys and fourteen girls. As the school is located in suburbs, there is a large diversity of students; African American, Indian, Indonesian and Chamain. There is a student that is ELL (English Language Learner). Among the student population it is noted that one of the students has have spent above the average amount of time assign to in-school suspension. However, there are no noted disabilities among the students, . cognitive nor physical, present in this class In this science class, the teacher is using Vygotsky’s theory; Specially, in the scaffolding stage. The teacher is trying to get the students to understand the relationship between the processes of photosynthesis and cellar respiration. She puts up a picture with blank “key terms” and expects the students to place those key terms in the correct area. When the key terms were in the wrong place, the teacher had an open discussion with her students. She gave little bit of guidance to help the students figure it out. She also lead them into groups, had them talk to each other. The teacher went around and helped direct the discussion to the correct answer. There is

. strong social constructivist in her lesson plan The teacher has used cognitivist and cooperative/collaborative theory in the developed learning. The cognitivist theory is building memory, monitoring their own learning and project of context. The teacher is trying to build the memory of the relationship and key components of photosynthesis and cellar respiration. Instead of giving a lecture it’s an open discussion with the students. She is having the students discuss the key terms and their placement but is stepping in, was needed, to get the group to the correct answer. The students are taking their ownership of learning. Since the student are separated in groups, there are a few times where the teacher splits the class discussion into the small group discussion. This is where cooperative/collaborative theory is present. The teacher is not able to be in all of the small groups at once, and is relying on . the students to make the decision to remain focused on the assigned discussion topic

( C. High School (Analyzing American Literature Through a Fish Bowl Discussion #1283

The class in the video is group of Juniors in high school between the ages of sixteen to seventeen. Its mix of males and females; eight males and ten females. None of the students are English Language Learners, nor have any disabilities. All but one student is Caucasian, the one identifies as “mixed race”. The group of students are motivated and ready to take the step into . critical thinking and analysis The student’s cognitive development is mix of the Piaget’s and Vygotsky’s theory. The students are thinking abstractly and reasoning about the context of the book. The students are also comparing the book to real life situations. This is an example of formal operational on Piaget’s stage. Due to the teacher using the fish bowl method, its example of Vygotsky’s theory.

In the middle of the classroom, there is small circle of five desks. They are filled with students and other desk are around the circle, closer to the walls. The students go around the circle to talk about the content and answer the questions. It is similar to an open discussion, in which the teacher is monitoring and leading the students into a more depth analysis. This is an example of scaffolding. The high schoolers are in a different stage than the elementary schoolers. A high . school student is able to develop deeper content and analysis with less help from a teacher The learning development strategy is constructivist with collaborative theory. In the Constructivist theory, the strategy is using scenarios/real world based related to content. The students are comparing the character Jay Gatsby to other pro athletics. The students are describing the two as American Dreamers. The teacher adding on to their analysis by asking if Jay Gatsby is happy about their American Dream versus Daisy. By using the fish bowl approach only students in the circle can speak. This goes along with collaborative. The students are using the opinions and analysis from one another to build to content, which results in better relation .’ and understanding of the American classic book ‘The Great Gatsby

D. Students with Unique Needs (Building Fluency through Developing Letter-Sound (Relationships #729

This video is an observation of the student getting extra help from the special services programs. The student is named Gabe. He is nine year old third grader. Gabe has challenges with cognitive and physical barriers. The student is getting extra help on being motivated and remaining on task. Gabe has been medically diagnosed with Carnitine Deficiency, and sensory processing disorder. Due to his condition, Gabe get fatigued easily, and has low muscle tone. It

. also leads to Gabe having a hard time focusing Since it is just one observation of one student, the teacher uses the Vygotsky theory approach. The teacher is using zone of proximal. The zone of proximal is when the skill is too difficult for a child to master on his/her own, but that can be accomplished with the guidance of a master or an adult. The teacher is guiding Gabe about correct sounds and combination of the letter that correspond with the sounds. There are some points in the video where the teacher has to show an example by saying the first word, and first sounds to sound out the word correctly. This is would help Gabe with his reading. There are times where the teacher has to get Gabe . more focused on task. He is refocused by putting his head down on the desk Although the teacher is using work books in her lesson plan, the approach of the learning theory being used is behaviorist. The behaviorist theory is direct instruction, led by the teacher and telling students exactly what is needed. This is guided practice. The teacher giving Gabe direct instruction every time she changes the lesson. Then the teacher is saying the word and Gabe has to be pick when “-ed” ending it is (ed, d , and t). Gabe has to choose which one is . correct. When he is wrong the teacher ask him to try it again, and praises him when is he correct

There are many reasons why a teacher needs to have a general understanding of the

psychology and human development. With a wide arrange of different abilities and needs from each student in the classroom; teachers need to understand the individual differences and what they amount to in their students. This includes, but is not limited to, the students’ abilities, interests, attitudes, and needs of the different levels of growth and development for each student. By understanding human development, the principals allow teachers to incorporate appropriate teaching methods to students’ life at that time. The teachers also need to know about the develop

of learning, so when student is falling behind, they can make sure they are getting their needs . met or more help on the content itself

As educators there needs to be an understanding of the difference in individual students’

developmental levels Every student has different motivations, attitudes, and responses to the specific classroom whether its classroom/school environments or instructional practices. Each student is at a different level of understanding, retaining, and applying of knowledge. The teachers have to be prepared to modify or tailor their lesson planning to address individual students’ needs and preferences to make sure they will will be successful in school and life. If there are ELL students in your class, you can help the student by providing the instruction in their native language or using pictures to assist the understanding of the instruction for the ELL student. The teacher can also have the student stay put and then go over the instruction with them at their desk. A different approach is breaking the students into small groups, so the ELL student . can practice speaking in English with their peers

By understanding the various learning theories, as a future educator, I can use each of the

the learning theories to inspire, motivate, and support all students of my students to succeed. I would use the behaviorist along with the cognitivist theory. By using the behaviorist, I would guide the students into understanding math, and may use token when the student at doing great. Cognitivist theory is building memory. Students needs to remember basic function in math. The . basic functions can be useful in school and out in life...
