Chiquita - paying workers 1 US Dollar per day : many went on strike, pointed guns at people to make them go back to work Hanes - closed its factory and added 500 workers to the unemployment line when it closed the factory due to bringing workers from China which they paid US dollars Dole - not paying workers a decent salary Del Monte - not paying workers a decent salary What is being done about this? Many of the workers are going on strike demanding a better pay which has caused commotion of burning buildings and destruction. Was there any information that was outrageous or something that surprised you? In the beginning of the movie, showing the view of what foreigners see of Jamaica compared to the reality of many Jamacians who live there was very surprising. How were governments complicit? Governments were complicit by giving loans to those who needed it but made it hard to pay off. Is the International monetary fund (IMF), World Bank, or the World Trade Organization involved? If so how? ● IMF - many devaluations in funds, reverse fiscal deficit, key institution, have a bank they could turn to for short term borrowing, stabilization of world currency : private banking systems : devaluing our currency : making loans that are difficult to pay off ● WTO - preferential rates are unconstitutional, people protest : target discriminatory European systems : ruling that no one invests in bananas Critique good and bad.

Good critique is that it provides jobs to those in places which might have not had jobs. Bad critique is that lots of locals go out of business because of foreign countries importing products into Jamaica which leads to cheaper products compared to ones sold locally. How does capitalism create or exacerbates this problem? Capitalism creates this problem with bringing the work that requires little to no skills to a place with basically no regulations for workers. They pay the workers very poorly to do the work in which they are able to make lots of profit off of it. How do you feel watching this? After watching this movie, it makes me think about other countries that are typically not as wealthy and when foreigners come and visit it; they only see the “good” side of it where there are lots more happening behind that. It's common for many places that aren’t as wealthy as they use this method to bring others in....
