Introduction: The lesson will start off by reading Joe Troiano's Spookley the Square Pumpkin. Ages of Children : This activity is geared toward preschool-aged kids, most appropriately four- and five-year-olds. Number of Children: 4 to 5 the activity can be done with a large group of children, depending on how large the class is. An appropriate ratio would be 4 to 5 depending on how many cars are available.

Time of Day: Any time of day that there is free play going on would be appropriate. Morning or afternoon, this activity can be picked up any time a general circulation is going on in the classroom. The set-up of the activity, however, should be done in the morning as a group effort. PD-HLTH 4: Fine Motor Manipulative Skills ○ Child demonstrates increasing precision, strength, coordination, and efficiency when using muscles of the hand for play and functional tasks

The children will show fine motor skills by cutting out the piece of spookley then gluing it together.

Learning Goals:The experience’s objectives and learning outcomes appropriate for meeting curricular and children’s needs. ● The children will select paper to create a very unique spookley pumpkin. ● To introduce children to different shape and colors. ● The children will learn that it's ok to be different. ● The children wil recognize that it is special to have a group that consists of individuals ● with many differences ● Have students recognize that diversity is about more than appearances

● What makes you special? What is one thing that you like about yourself that makes you unique? Assessment (types of assessments used throughout the experience) Before Assessment: ●

Children have had experiences with cutting and manipulating art materials using fine motor, visual art and language and literacy skills in the past. Their current interest and our topic of study, is the fact that Halloween is right around the corner.

During Assessment: ●

The children are in the process of exploring fall. This experience is relative to the children’s learning because it focuses on fine motor and visual art. cognitive and physical development. After creating spookley, the children will be able to display them in the pumpkin patch with in the dramatic play area.

After Assessment: ●

I will assess informally, using observational records such as video, pictures, and pedagogical documentation. After the activity, I will take the information collected during the observation of the activity for reflection. I will use this information and reflection to plan for additional fine motor, measuring, or art experiences for children to continue gaining knowledge and reflecting on our topic of construction as well as demonstrating and enhancing the skills related within the developmental domains stated for this lesson.

Structure and Procedures: Sequence of events (The before, during, and after the experience e.g., Engagement/Opening, Procedures, Conclusion) Before: ●

After completing the book the children will go to the table and I will provide them with a variety of color paper allowing them to choose their own paper to create their virgin of a spookley pumpkin.

Read “Spookley The Square Pumpkin” ●

This fun fall book will teach children that everyone is unique and has a purpose while teaching color and shapes.

After reading the story ask the children questions such as. ●

What shape do you see when you pumpkins? Recognizing Shapes)



What color do you see when pumpkins? (Recognizing Colors)



Have you ever seen different color pumpkins?



Have you ever seen different shape pumpkins?



What would be your favorite shape?



How do you think Spookley felt when the other pumpkins were making fun of him?



How would you feel if someone were teasing you?



How would you feel if you were teasing someone?



How do you think Spookley felt to be a hero?



I wonder can you cut out all of the pieces of spookley to put him together.



Invite children to the table.



Refer to the book and asked them what they remember about spookley the square pumpkin.



Move from circle time to seats at the tables.

At the end of the book we see that the farmer grew a variety of pumpkins...different colors and different shapes. Each child will have the opportunity to choose a color of construction paper that they want their pumpkin to be. Each child will have their very own unique pumpkin.
