Egg Drop Apparatus Lab Report

“Since the introduction of the first automobile in the late 1800s, car manufacturers have been constantly working on new techniques and technologies to improve the safety and comfort of their cars.” (Evolution of Car Safety Features). The egg drop was a way to demonstrate conservation of energy and finding a way to reduce force on an egg that is dropped from the 3rd floor. My egg drop apparatus consisted a lot of ways to prevent my egg from cracking once it hit the ground. To create my egg drop apparatus, I followed the evolution of car safety features which shows me ways to keep an object safe and protected from a hard force. The evidence that I used was the seat belt and the air bag. In order to reduce the force the egg experienced my group and I found a solution by using the seatbelt method. What we used as a seatbelt was a sponge. The seatbelt method works by allowing an object to stay in place. As evidence, “It keeps you from flying through the windshield or herding towards the dashboard when your car comes to an abrupt stop” which in this case the egg will reduce the force once it hits the ground. This supported further by the concept of Newton's 3rd Law, which states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. The size of the forces on the first object equals to the size of the force on the second object as well. By having a sponge, the egg will maintain in the same place and not move around so much. As a results it has been found that using the seatbelt method allowed my egg to not hit the ground at a greater force and not crack.

My other component of the apparatus was using the air bag method. What we used for an air bag was cotton balls. The airbag method works by slowing down the object's speed to zero. As evidence, “The airbag has the space between the passengers and the steering wheel or dashboard and a fraction of a second to work with” which helps the object to not hit with much force. This is supported further by the concept of Newton's 1st Law, which states that an object at rest will stay at rest and an object in motion will stay in motion with the same speed and direction unless an unbalanced force occurs. By having the cotton balls it will have an unbalanced force between the egg and the ground which it will prevent it from breaking. As a results it has been found that the cotton balls did reduce the force towards the egg by having an unbalanced action. Both sponge and cotton balls helped my egg from hitting the ground with a huge force. These two method allowed my egg to survive. The sponge which was the seat belt kept the egg from moving around and holding it tight. The cotton ball which was the airbag helped my egg by slowing it down the egg once it hit the ground. Throwing the egg from the 3rd floor and using my safety features kept my egg safe....
