Description

EGG DROP LAB By Alexander Barrera At school I have been challenged to do the egg drop challenge for my physics class and sad to say I wasn't ready for it. Designing such a contraption with limited tools seems challenging for someone who is not well known to physics, especially not with designing things.

Materials 4 sheets of 8 ½ x 11 inch paper, 1 meter of masking tape, 1 resealable plastic bag (sized for an egg), 1 meter of string, 3 straws, Eggs, and white school glue. Now that I know the materials, I know what I'm working with: 3 straws, 1 meter of string and an egg that can't break. I started to think of all sorts of designs to see which is best. My thought process was how can I make something that won't crack the egg. Soon enough I sketched my first design. Pic 1 The shaded part represents the paper also the square on the right that isn't shaded is the parachute and the lines attaching them together is the string. The design was that the square shape with a piece of paper covering it can be a bed and find a way to glue the egg on the base and drop and hope the egg land's right and doesn't crack. The design seems simple but I'm afraid that wind can have a big impact on it if there isn't any wind it will land perfectly fine but if there is any wind then it can land sideways and end up cracking the egg. Pic 2 This second design is personally my favorite. It also was the one I got inspiration to design the prototype. The triangle shape I liked better than the square shape but what I liked about it the most is that it protects the egg no matter what side the triangle flips to and also requires you to cut the straws to make that protection around it and I doubt that it will fail if I build it correctly. This third design got inspiration of the second one but this one I didn’t really know what i was doing here the original plan was to create a pyramid shape and put a layer of paper as a base in the middle where the egg will sit and be secure and the parachute will basically be the main safe thing but then I thought what if the straws detach so I wrapped it with a string but after all wind Is still a factor so it might tip of and crack the egg from the side if not landed directly on the ground from the bottom. Here is the prototype: Prototype It wasn't fully complete before I abandoned that design completely and went with my second design and after testing it the egg did not crack....
