Notes on Electron Microscopy Biology A-Level OCR A...
Electron Microscopy (1) The light microscope is not the only type of microscope used by biologists. By the 1950s biologists had developed two other types of microscope: the electron microscope and the laser scanning confocal microscope. Each microscope type has its strengths and weaknesses, and tends to be used to observe different things. Types of Electron Microscopes There are two types of electron microscopes: Transmission electron microscope (TEM) Electron pass through and around the specimen, giving some contrast - the image is 2D with magnification of x500,000 Scanning electron microscopes (SEM) Electron do not go through or pass around the sample but reflect off – the image is 3D with magnification of x100,000 Colored Images All electron microscopes cannot see in color because, unlike light microscopes, there is only one wavelength transmitting (electrons) The color has to be ‘educatedly’ guessed at and then added...
