Description

Discussion My web search generated a malware variant by name Emotet. The malware had been reported by both Symantec and MacAfee. Both sources had indicated that Emotet is propagated through spam mails. Emotet malware was first reported by Symantec on 13th July 2017, within a span of two weeks MacAfee reported the same on 26th July. Symantec reported that the malware gets into the systems through malicious scripts or macro enabled documents. MacAfee reported that the malware attempted the users to click the malicious links. Symantec reported that the malware is polymorphic meaning that it has ability to change itself every time it is downloaded to avoid detection. Its polymorphic nature makes it hard for the organization to detect it within the system. It is an advanced malware that uses various tricks to disguise itself to avoid being detected. MacAfee also noted that the malware has a habit of ransacking through the contact lists mainly email addresses and sending itself. By doing this, it increases its chances of penetration since the receiver will assume that it has come from one of the contacts from the email list. Both vendors indicated that the most effective tool to prevent spread of the emotet is learning how its malware works. According to the Symantec, the malware targets the individuals, businesses and government infrastructural activities. Both software vendors warned the users against connecting their computers to the internet once the system has been cleaned. The Symantec reported that the users should ensure that their system is up to date with the latest patches form windows to get rid of the vulnerability. There were no significant differences on how the two software vendors reported the emotet malware. It is like the two vendors were reading from the same scripture.
