Handout: The status of women in society - many men died in the first world war, so they had to be replaced by women → they became employed → the new working women was born -in 1920 women got the right to vote also at national level → political participation -this led to a whole new self-confidence of the women -no longer interrested in a firm bond and no longer necessarily married -devoted themselves to leisure activities (parties,cinema…) Before the first wold war women had to stay at home doing the household. They had not the right to vote or to work and couldn´t go to parties or to the cinema. -more comfortable clothes for example (flat shoes, pants instead of skirts, shorter skirts) → women where no longer just beautiful to look at, they where able to take an active part in life → fast running, fast dancing or sport was possible now -women began to behave more and more like men →they cut their hair short → started smoking in public (previously only allowed for men) - ideal of beauty was to be very slim and not to show any curves Before the first world war women wore dresses with corsettes and very long skirts

In general women gained equality, autonomity and independance. Self-image of the USA at that time: -saw themself as modern an as a developed country -rasism was a big issue -good economy → helps USA to become a global superpower
