Why Dance Should be Considered a Sport? “A sport is an athletic activity requiring skills or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature” as stated from the dictionary. Limiting the mind to think that dance only consist of ballet is ridiculous. The art of dancing ranges into many unique areas being hip hop, contemporary, jazz and so much more. With the combination of steps and movements, the body goes through intense pain which can possibly lead to fractures, strained muscles, along with other external damages. Dancing requires time, motivation and plenty of practice just like any other sport. Pressured by competitions, the constant urge to look immaculate does not come easy. Yes, dance is considered more so an art, but with the amount of skills, energy, and determination which ties into it, dance should also be considered a sport! The body of a dancer experiences extreme pain after an intense dance class. Dancers indulge in bodily workouts which include running and stretching, along with intense movements, and short breaks to rejuvenate. The combination of steps along with tricks to make the routines look amazing is not a piece of cake. The ability to retain steps and remember counts at the snip of a finger is outstanding! Moreover, not only do athletes experience horrific injuries throughout their athletic career. Sweat and tears result in this pain for both dancers and athletes. It’s so easy to walk off a field or a court when players have injured a limb or pulled a muscle, but with dancers, they are expected to continue until the performance is over. The injuries can be similar, let’s say pulling a small muscle in the leg; dancers learn how to maneuver around situations as such, but athletes “punk out”. Who’s the real athlete now? Why

Adderley 2 is it that dance can’t be recognized as a sport? Is it because they wear stockings and point shoes? I believe that any activity which gives the body a proper workout should be considered a sport. In addition, dancers work constantly hard all year round, competing in dance competitions and improving on dance techniques they’ve learned throughout the year. Other sports have off seasons where they are given time to heal their muscles and prepare for their “major comeback”. For something that is so entertaining, I don’t understand why it can’t be recognized for what it truly is and consist of, which is dedication and hard work. At super bowl games, half time shows at basketball games, what are you entertained by? Dancing! For every sporting season, who do you regularly sight? dancers! The point made here is that dancers work through every season of sports to enhance and raise their viewing and rate levels. Some people only watch super bowls for the halftime shows and that alone can strike the NFL’s audience ratings. According to CNN Media, the 2015 super bowl football game gained 114.4 million viewers at the start of the game, then it climaxed to 118.5 during the halftime show. There was a 4.1 million increase in views during the halftime show because it’s usually the “best part” as many describe it. Additionally, do you ever look close enough to see how much effort is put into every step they portray on that stage? The many transformations, the effort of looking identical and the body involvement are what sums up a fantastic performance. Not only, but also the competitive factor of this activity is very intense. You thought basketball season was intense, well watch a dance competition. In fine arts, dancers are marked on their elegance factor, the correct use of dance movements along with a pleasant stage presence. As it pertains to sports, their markings range differently to fit the sport but both activities has set rules. Comparatively, the beneficial factor of dancing would expand if it was a full sport. The recognition of hard work is greatly needed because dancers work their “asses” off to entertain people. People should recognize the passion they dance with, along with their determination to make someone smile. People tend to say that gymnastics is a part of dancing and this is true, but dancing is so much

Adderley 3 more than just flips and tricks. A true dancer executes moves that a gymnast can’t. But keep in mind that gymnast have made their way to the Olympics. Dancers dream of participating in worldwide events like that, to gain exposure along with academic opportunities, but society is holding them back. These talented people are cheated out of their academic opportunities such as full scholarships to colleges and universities. Yes, there are schools that provide scholarships for dance, but most schools offer full scholarships to football players or basketball players. The unfair treatment is absurd and this needs to fix. Conclusively, dance has been criticized in so many ways that people only see it as a fun activity. To many people, dance takes much more than just shuffling one’s feet, instead it takes special technique, hard work and commitment. Many sports revolve around dance, as dancers do the same tricks and stunts as football players. These talented people are being pulled away from huge opportunities and are given the rotten end of the stick. As years continue to go by, hopefully the art of dance becomes appreciated by many and its spontaneous efforts be accepted.
