Final Comments
Parents need to monitor their children's activities, especially regarding the use of smartphones or any video games so that they are not so obsessed until they can endanger themselves or the people around them.
The article written by Philip M.Boffey titled “Do Violent Video Games Lead to Violence?” (2019), focuses on how violent video games lead to violence. The author’s tone is neutral. Philip is serious that violent video games are one of the causes that lead to violence. Firstly, Philip declares that the amount of violence shown in some current video games is extraordinary. For example, the victims are murdered with every danger that we can imagine such as machine guns, clubs, hammers, chainsaws and other things. As evidence, in the 2011 Supreme Court decision, the bloodiness was described graphically by Justice Samuel Alito as a concurring opinion. (Philip, 2019) Next, the violent video games show clearly the correlation between the exposure of violent entertainment and little real-world effects. For instance, children tend to make louder noises after a few minutes of playing violent games unlike than after playing nonviolent video games. This is proven by the late Justice Antonio Scalia representing the majority in the 2011 Supreme Court decision and was mocked at the notion regarding this issue. (Philip, 2019) Furthermore, the author mentions that one of the most studied is the correlation between the exposure of violent video games and aggressive behaviour. The aggressive behaviour includes insults, threats, hitting, pushing, hair pulling, biting, and other appearance of real and verbal aggression. As evidence, the association’s official position points out in a resolution adopted in August 2015. (Philip, 2019) For our overall stand, we totally agree with Philip’s idea. He states that “The amount of violence depicted in some current video games is outstanding”. Both of us agree with this statement. This is because some violent video games show a lot of violent action without filtering it. There is also evidence from another article by Loria regarding ours' stand. According to Loria (2018), she said that it is easy to find video games that portray blood, gore and violence.
Next, Philip also states that “Video game use is associated with a decrease in empathy and other socially desirable behavior.”. We both agreed with his statement because when a person is too focused on video games, they will be less social with the outside world. Sukkyung You (2014) also agreed with our stand. He said that violent video games have a significant direct effect on aggressive behaviors, and a significant indirect effect on prosocial behaviors. In a nutshell, we strongly agree with Philip that violence games are one of the reasons that can lead to the violence in real life. As a precaution, parents need to monitor their children's activities, especially regarding the use of smartphones or any video games so that they are not so obsessed until they can endanger themselves or the people around them.
