games. Not only did the PlayStation revolutionize gaming, it became the first console to sell over 100 million copies within a decade of its initial launch (2005, November 30). The PlayStation was a 32-bit home video game console that ran on a CD-ROM and was the first step to the fifthgeneration of gaming. Even Bill Gates was impressed with the quality of the console’s 3D graphics and commented, “Our game designer likes the Sony machine.” (Griffith, 2013). Sony eventually went on to redesign the original PlayStation console with a slimmer version called PSone in 2000. The PSone went on to outsell all other consoles in 2000, including Sony’s next generation console, the PlayStation 2. On March 2000, Sony released the PlayStation 2 as the successor of PlayStation. PlayStation 2 was backward compatible with the PlayStation games and went on to be the best selling home console to date, shipping over 155 million units by the end of 2012. PlayStation 2 had a 128-bit console that used both a CD-ROM and a DVD-ROM. This meant better graphic games and an improvement on 3D quality. As with the PlayStation console, Sony redesigned the PS2 with a slimmer model at the end of 2004, dubbing it the PlayStation 2 Slim. PlayStation 2 went on to be a huge success in console gaming with over 3,800 games designed for the console. In the year 2006, Sony introduced the PlayStation 3. Instead of using the traditional CDROM and DVD-ROM console, Sony adopted the Blu-ray console for use on the PS3. The PS3 was the first to introduce HD gaming in 1080p and it was met with huge success. Sony discontinued backward compatibility with PS3 because of expensive manufacturing costs and instead enabled online gaming with the launch of the PlayStation Network. Since PS3’s hardware was so advanced, it was also used to build supercomputers for high-performance computing. The system controllers were six axis, which enhanced intuitive gaming because it was sensible to body movements. There are nearly 800 games developed for the PS3 with Sony still

manufacturing the console to date. Its game, GTA 5 went on to become the highest selling game of all time. Just like their previous models, Sony decided to redesign their PS3 model with the PS3 Slim and later the PS3 Superslim. As of November 2013, the PS3 sold over 80 million units worldwide (Parfitt, 2013). On November 15, 2013, nearly seven years since the PS3 releases, Sony launched the PlayStation 4 system. The major hardware improvement with the PlayStation 4 is the AMX x8664 Accelerated Processing Unit. This feature makes the PS4 “the world’s most powerful console” according to Sony (Nelva, 2013). The PlayStation 4 is also designed very intuitively with userfriendly controls. Examples include the home button on the Dual Shock 4 controller, which immerses the user into the world of online gaming and the share button, which enables the user to glance at in-game play streamed live from friends. The focus of the PS4 is for social gameplay since it has become huge trend with our current generation of household gaming. As of August 13, 2014, the PS4 sales topped 10 million worldwide, with its biggest competitor, the Xbox One only selling 5 million (Anthony, 2014). To date, there are currently 388 games on the list for the PS4 and 143 games available for purchase today. I believe that the success of the PS4 makes it the king of household console gaming in today’s world.
