Video Extra Credit 2...

Description

Video Extra Credit 2 The video is a short segment from the television show “The Office” and portrays the use of nonverbal communication, which every character exemplifies in different ways. Nonverbal communication can be either intentional or unintentional but still have the power to transmit meaning through behavioral cues and physical appearance, not vocal language. In fact, the power of nonverbal messages often trumps verbal communication and can potentially hold more weight. Kinesics is another term that is used in understanding how meaning is conveyed through the use of the body, otherwise known as body language. A few examples of Kinesics include facial expressions, eye contact, and gestures. Facial expressions was one of the most frequently used nonverbal cues demonstrated within this video. Whether it was uninterested, straight faces when attempted to be entertained, eye rolling when annoyed, or shocked and confused faces during uncomfortable situations. There were also many moments when Pam and Jim simply looked at each other and knew exactly what the other was thinking, without the use of any words. Usually, this was when they were made to feel uncomfortable when Michael and Jan were bickering, even though the two engaged in intimate and affectionate behaviors (another form of nonverbal communication), like cuddling and lap sitting, just moments before. Also, when Jim came up with the excuse as to why he needed to leave the dinner party, Pam smiled demonstrating she knew exactly what Jim was doing. In regards to eye contact, there were many instances where Jim avoids eye contact when uncomfortable or unwilling to get involved. This is exemplified when Jan tried to dance with him or when Michael wanted support. Gestures were often used to help express emotion, whether that was during the game or when Michael and Jan were arguing. Clapping is another gesture that was used when something was funny or entertaining. Lastly, Pam also had her arms crossed

when explaining that she was annoyed. Overall, the use of nonverbal communication helped display meaning throughout the video....
