Description

Cinnamon Barrington English 150 Dr. Pettus 11 May 2020 Fences review draft August Wilson's mesmerizing play Fences is one of the plays that really gives an inside look of an african american family in the 1950s and their experience. The protagonist and the antagonist Troy Maxson, a 53 year old man, the head of the household who spent 15 years in jail for manslaughter. Troy was originally migrated to the north from the south during the great migration to seek opportunity. During that time in jail Troy took up time to get into baseball that he became passionate about and became one of the most exceptional baseball players in the negro league. When Troy got out of prison he lost 15 years of his life so it was hard for him to adjust back to his life. Throughout the play the main issue between the distinct characters and the personal relationships, Wilson inputs multiple themes in the play to indicate deeper meanings and issues. In the beginning of the play Troy is back on his feet being the first african american man as a garbage truck driver. Troy’s younger son Cory who is in high school and a star football player and wants to continue football as his career while Troy has different beliefs about where Cory's future lies. Troy believes that relying on a sport for a career will destroy Cory and he doesn't want Cory to be obsessed with football just like he was with baseball to only get discriminated against and not be able to fulfill his dream he was so passionate about. But Cory believes that since Troy was not able to live out his dream to be a professional baseball player in the major leagues he's jealous and does not want to see his son succeed.

Troy’s wife Rose who is a hardworking, devoting and supportive wife who urges Troy to finish their fence in front of the house and he constantly holds it off. Wilson utilizes the fence as a symbol representing Troy and his family and how close they are. The fence is not completed so it's a symbol to say his relationship with Cory and Rose are not completed and it's not secure. Wilson adds monologues throughout the play of Troy speaking to the audience but in reality is speaking to death and the devil. Waiting and waiting for death to come and fight him. Wilson adds allusions to the play Troy’s brother Gabriel who was in an accident and had a metal plate in his brain. Wilson purposely alludes to the character Gabriel similar to the archangel in the bible and tells Troy about St Peter's and judgement day and he's here for him as a guardian angel....
