Summary

Analyzed Morning Summit cereal (from costco) food label/nutrition facts....

Description

1. Take two pictures and of the item and embed it on the page. One picture of the cover of the item and one picture clearly showing the food label.

2. Describe the food item. What is it in detail. For example, "Pureed roasted tomato and red pepper soup from a cardboard carton" vs "soup". Morning Summit cereal with Almonds, whole grain flakes, pumpkin seeds, dried cranberries, and dried cherries. 3. Describe the serving size and the number of servings per container. Serving size is 2/3 cup (55g) and about 19 servings per container.

4. When analyzing your food label, make note of the way the food is described. Does it describe anything that you feel is done in a way to boost sales? The front of the label advertises almonds as the the first ingredient boldly in large font. On the side panel it also says 15g of whole grain per serving at least 48g recommended daily. I do feel this is done intentionally by promoting only the positive health benefits as a way to boost sales. 5. Could the description, picture, or claims on the label make it misleading or difficult to decide if it is a good choice? I think that claiming almonds as the first ingredient could maybe be misleading since ingredients are listed by weight and flakes are considerably lighter than whole almonds. 6. Complete the following math based on the Nutrition Fact Panel. Show your work as outline below so I can catch any errors. 7. After completing all the questions above: has your impression of the food item you chose changed since analyzing it, why or why not? My impression has slightly changed now after calculating the percentage of carbs. I was already aware that cereal has a lot of carbs but I tend to have more than the serving size (usually 1.5 cups) so I’m consuming a higher percentage of carbs and fat than I realized. I know cereal isn’t the healthiest choice for breakfast but its quick/convenient, so in the future I’ll make more of an effort to have portions closer to the serving size. For question 6:

Calories from Carbs =!! 4 x 29 Grams = 116 Calories (Kcal) ! ! Calories from Protein = 4 x 6 Grams = 24 Calories ! ! Calories from Fat = !!!!!9 x 15 Grams = 135 Calories ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Total Calories = 275 ! ! ! % Kcal from Carbs: ! Kcal from carbs 116/ total calories 275 = 42.18 x 100 = 42% ! ! ! % Kcal from Protein: ! Kcal from Protein 24/ total calories 275 = .08 x 100 = 8% ! ! ! ! % Kcal from Fat: ! !Kcal from Fat 135 / total calories 275 = .49 x 100 = 49%...
