Final Paper of Traditional Chinese Culture The Practice of Foot Binding Novi Andriani 2012059093 2012 IET Throughout history, women have tried many techniques to make themselves as beautiful as possible and as the result, they resorted to achieve three-inch golden lotus by having their feet bound. Foot binding was a painful and debilitating practice. It began in the late Tang Dynasty (618-907) and began to spread to the upper classes until the Song Dynasty (960-1297). During the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) and Qing dynasty (1644-1911), the culture of foot binding was widespread in China until it was eventually banned by the majority group in the Revolution of Sun Yat Sen in 1911. It is estimated that somewhere between a billion and four billion women in China had bound feet between the 10th and 20th centuries. Foot binding became popular as a means of displaying status, since women from wealthy families who did not need them to work could afford to have their feet bound, and was correspondingly adopted as a symbol of beauty in Chinese culture. The practice became so prevalent that a woman who did not have bound feet would have difficulty finding a husband, for most families demanded a woman with tiny feet when selecting a wife for their son.
