OCT 31, NOV 2 Frontline: Poor Kids Background Filmed in 2012 Between 2008-2010, the U.S. labor market lost ~8 million jobs Unemployment rate in the U.S. peaked in 2009 → 10% One is counted as unemployed if he/she is looking for work People who have given up, minors, and incarcerated individuals are not counted in the unemployment rate Video is about 3 families; focuses on the children’s POV Notes 1 in 13 Americans are unemployed Food banks struggle to keep up w/demands Homeless shelters have an overcapacity Brittney - 9 years old and Roger Dad lost his job Has a lot of temporary jobs No hot water bc they didn’t pay the bills in time Lost everything in storage Afraid of losing their home A lot of people in America need help w/food bc they’re poor and/or homeless Nutrition Club Schools give kids a bag of food that they need to make last for the weekend Things change fast Eat pizzas instead of fruits and vegetables because it’s cheaper People tease kids for the way they look Mom can’t work, can’t drive, and she’s sick Episodes and seizures when she’s stressed Body shuts down when she’s stressed Eventually it may kill her Doesn’t want her kids to grow up to be like her Got pregnant.. No money to take care of the baby Have to make extra room in the garage But the family’s happy Life’s going to be hard for the baby More than 46 mil people live below the poverty line Kaylie 10 years old and Tyler (12) Lives w/mom and brother Hunger No milk w/cereal Income: 1480 Bills: 1326 No money for food or gas Collect cans for money Squished are $0.02 and not squished are $0.05 Afraid of losing their home and starving Kids take on jobs for money Ex. mowing the lawn Mother Depression Panic attacks scared Only option looks like it’ll be to sell their house and put things in storage Daycare Kids don’t want to move bc of friends, pets, etc. Kids take on hobbies to forget Ex. dancing, cheerleading People stay in motels if they can’t pay rent Use the sink as their fridge Not enough food Kaylie wants to get an education and a good job “People can’t stop you from believing in your own dreams” The U.S. has one of the highest child poverty rates in the developed world Jasmine - 9 years old. Jonny 13 years old In the salvation army - homeless shelter Children cannot be left alone in the shelter Children have to do chores Recession → parents lose jobs 2 hour commute to work each way People make fun of kids living in shelters Kids are embarrassed bc they’re poor, they live in shelters, other kids tease them
