Tuto law & society: (Chapter 4) law & culture Fundamentals of Western and islam culture a) My #MalaysiaUnites story is basically my whole life as I am from Penang. This means that I had many friends from many kinds of cultures. This was further added by me entering schools that are not having just 1 culture based or a minority culture based instead I entered a school where every races would be united. This is then further added by me entering MMU. The first element which I could relate to my story is values and beliefs. Values are a culture’s standard for discerning what is good and just in society while Beliefs are the tenets or convictions that people hold to be true. For instance, I believe in Islam while some of my friends don’t. However, it did not stop us from becoming friends. The second element is sanction. Sanctions are a form of social control, a way to encourage conformity to cultural norms. For example, it can be seen in schools as when getting a good grade or doing a good deed, teachers will praise us. The final element is symbol and language. Symbols such as gestures, signs, objects, signals, and words help people understand the world. For instance, it can be seen uniforms such as school uniforms to know that the particular place is where we study. b) 1) The essence of pleasure (western) vs ‘Amr bi al-marufand nahi‘an al munkar (Islam) the western culture encourages pleasure in life as it even uses scientific jargon to justify it: “Depriving oneself of pleasures leads to complexes and other psychological abnormalities”. Islamic faith would show indiff erence to the values of good and evil. 2) Limiting scientific knowledge (western) vs Creative and Critical Thinking (islam) Limiting knowledge to what can be observed merely by physical senses and human made laboratories which confines the primary factor in man’s development in things such as religion, morals, wisdom. Global civilization created by Islam succeeded in activating the mind and thought of the people who entered its fold. As a result of Islam, the nomadic Arabs became torchbearers of science and learning....
