Gaining Our Political Views Ideology: A set of ideas and beliefs that act as both a guide and a constraint upon an individual or organizations behavior. These ideas shape political outcomes in an attempt to change society to match an ideal. (Lilleker) - Examples: Libertarianism Ideology represents the core of political parties - A party is guided by a set of principales (ideologies) which determine: - Values: what a party stands for (equality, freedom, tradition, etc.) - Ethos: being a member suggests having a shared perspective - Ideologies determine the “product” of the party - Which people represent the party - What policies the party promotes - Communication will be designed to demonstrate how ideology has shaped policy and how the ides that underpin the ethos and values will be realized through the direction the party is promoting

Ideology determines political action Ideologies: 1. Offer an account or critique of the existing order (usually in the form of a ‘worldview’) 2. Provides the model of a desired future, a vision of what values are important in a ‘good society’ 3. Outlines a strategy for how political change can and should be brought about

Ideologies straddle the boundaries between theory and practice Ideograph A terms or short phrase that represents a highly abstract ideological position in a way that implies there is a clear meaning which is understood and valued by the public.
