Description

Walking: to travel on foot at a moderate speed Locomotion: moving from one location to another Gait: The pattern of how a person walks - a particular way or manner of walking Gait cycle: the time period/sequence of events between 2 successive occurrences of one of the repetitive events of walking e.g…from when one foot touches the ground to when it touches the ground again Stance phase: The term used to describe when the foot is in contact with the ground. Traditional terminology - Heel strike – Flat foot – Mid stance – Heel off – Toe off Or Initial Contact – Loading response – Mid stance – Terminal Stance – Pre swing Swing Phase: The term used to describe when the foot is in the air. Acceleration – Mid swing - Deceleration Or Initial swing – mid swing – Terminal swing Double support:

Both feet on floor - occurs in walking but not running

Flight Phase: No feet on floor – running Stride: one cycle of gait for one limb, e.g. right heel strike to right heel strike (2 steps) Step: right heel strike to left heel strike

Spatial Parameters of Gait: Step length - Right heel to left heel Stride Length - Right heel to right heel

Step width - parallel distance between two heel strikes. People will increase their base if they’re unstable Gait / Foot angle

Temporal(time) Parameters of Gait: Cadence (steps per minute) Velocity (distance covered in a given time) Average walking = 3.31 mph Stride Time - heel strike on left to heel strike on left Step time - heel strike on left to heel strike on right Swing and Stance phase time

Trunk swag in frontal plane - usually when relaxed. If you don't sway, you’re at risk of injury as you’re holding your body at tense - not allowing certain muscles to work

People are at more risk of falling in the Acceleration and Deceleration Phases of walking Things to look out for: - Reduced phase time on one leg - Reduced stance phase time on one leg - Reduced stride length - Reduced horizontal displacement on one side -...
