1-) Research Gabriel García Marquez’s (1927-2014) background and other work to get some insight into possible perspectives and biases and understand what he might be commenting on. 2-) Read the poem Love Constant Beyond Death, by Spanish poet Francisco de Quevedo (1580-1645), and identify how intertextuality with this poem is established in García Marquez’s short story. 3-) Identify the type of narrator and their role in the story. 4-) Identify the setting. Consider where the story is placed and why the author made that decision. 5-) Identify essential plot points: main problem (conflict), climax, and resolution. 6-) Analyze the most important characters in the story. Use the guiding questions in Texas A&M University (n.d.). 7-) Identify some literary devices employed in the text; e.g., allusion, foil, flashback, foreshadowing, imagery, irony, and symbolism. 8-) Identify the main themes present in the story and how they were developed.
