GASLAND MOVIE ANALYSIS

The Gasland part II is a very informative documentary narrated by the author himself Josh Fox who’s also a journalist. The entire documentary was exposing the greed and carelessness of big drilling corporation starting with the spillage of petrol by the BP corporation all over the Gulf of Mexico and the violation of properties rights against the people living nearby the drilling wells and plants. So, these deep drilling have contaminated the water supplies and polluted the air in which many of people have develop health problems. The movie starts with the 2010 BP Petrol Company where oil leaked all over the Gulf of Mexico. It was a lost case of ecosystem which has destroyed many animals’ habitats for examples coral reefs was destroyed, fishes died and those that survived was poisonous for consumption, and many sea birds was glued with petrol all over their bodies. But, BP had indeed intervened and cleaned their messed within a short time; although, the damage was already done and the healing process for these living being of the water seas is restoring for a long period of time (Josh Fox, 2013). Then, the narrator Josh Fox talks about his home state Delaware where the Delaware River Basin Commission had a new plan to open the Delaware River with 18,000 gas well. So, the commission had approved 15,000 gas wells in which one was located one mile from Josh Fox’s house. All started in 2008, the Delaware population had received a letter from big drilling corporation stating that their homes and cities are located on top of the Marcellus Shale which is a very long natural of gases reservoirs laying throughout many states of the east coast. Furthermore, the communities were promised a total amount of $200,000 which permits these drilling corporations to perform a “Fracking”. By definition, fracking is new drilling technology to dig deep for gas reservoirs where it uses pressurized water, sand, and chemical (Josh Fox, 2013). Unfortunately, many dangerous and toxic gases from the drilling process have penetrated the drinking water supply of the people living nearby those plants. The drilling was occupying at the time 34 states all over the United States where thousand of cases of water contamination, air pollution, and health problems. However, a one the big drilling corporation called “Cabot Oil and Gas” have denied all allegations stating there was no evidence of water contamination from the drilling wells. Therefore, many people living nearby those gas wells or drilling plants have noticed gases into their drinkable water supply for example these flammable gases: Methane, Ethane, Ethene have been detected which makes these water very combustible with the slight contact of fire. Sadly, there were many health complications for instance “Fracking” chemical trace was detected inside some people lungs and some people have nose bleeds from the release of the chemical through the air. There was an incident, Josh Fox went to a congress hearing between the victims and the drilling corporations in which the first amendment gave him right as a journalist to perform his job. But the security won’t allow him to record the session and as he 1

was evoking his right; he got arrested in front of everyone at the hearing and thrown out of the session. In conclusion, I strongly believe the government was hiding something from the general public and the same let these greedy drilling corporation proceed by poisoning the water supply of the people living nearby those plants. The government didn’t care about the wellbeing of the American people and the compromised of the ecosystem where the drinkable water supplies was toxic with combustible gases. Many people have developed health issues from the air pollution and water contamination. Henceforth, it was a violation of properties rights against the people living nearby the drilling wells and plants.
