Description

General Information for Applicants for Murdoch University’s Graduate Diploma in Psychology What is the Graduate Diploma in Psychology? Murdoch’s Graduate Diploma in Psychology is a 4th-year level qualification in psychology, accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC). With an APAC-accredited undergraduate degree in Psychology plus the GradDipPsych from Murdoch, you would have the academic qualifications currently necessary for provisional registration as a Psychologist. It includes coursework, a research project, and units to develop practical skills and an understanding of professional issues. Please note that some other Australian universities offer qualifications called GradDipPsych, which consist of undergraduate units. These qualifications are intended for students who have already completed a Bachelor’s degree in another area and wish to gain an undergraduate Psychology qualification by completing core units only. How to Apply You can apply online for the Graduate Diploma in Psychology – G1058 at https://www.murdoch.edu.au/study/courses/course-details/graduate-diploma-in-psychology(graddippsych)#

The deadlines may vary slightly each year, but we usually accept applications until just before the start of each semester. Admissions applications for semester 1 commencement are reviewed from October onwards, and those for semester 2 commencement are reviewed from May onwards. Applications are generally processed as they arrive and applicants are informed of the outcome as soon as possible. Sometimes offers may be conditional on such things as students supplying us their final transcript, achieving particular grades in any remaining units, or meeting Murdoch University general admission requirements. How is the Graduate Diploma in Psychology different from Honours? There is overlap between the GradDipPsych and Honours at Murdoch, but they are different in flavour. Honours is oriented towards preparing students for further study and higher degrees involving research. The GradDipPsych is oriented towards preparing students to enter the workforce. Some required coursework units will be shared by both courses. Both courses involve the completion of a year-long supervised research project. However, the Honours project makes up a greater proportion of your workload and is an individual project, while the GradDipPsych project is smaller in terms of workload and conducted by a small group of students. In either course, you would have some choice over the topic of your project, within the constraints of the supervision available. The GradDipPsych includes an additional unit focused upon the development of professional skills. At Murdoch University, either Honours or the GradDipPsych is a sufficient qualification to make you eligible to apply for postgraduate study in Psychology (e.g. the Masters in Applied Psychology

(Professional, Clinical or Organisational)). Students wishing to undertake a PhD, however, require Honours. Some other Australian universities may require Honours for entry into their Masters degrees, so it is wise to check directly with any university at which you are considering further study. Entry into either Honours or the GradDipPsych is competitive, but somewhat more so for Honours. Eligibility for Honours requires at least a Distinction average in your undergraduate psychology units. Eligibility for GradDipPsych requires at least a Credit average (see next section for details). Selection processes for the Graduate Diploma in Psychology at Murdoch Entry into the Graduate Diploma in Psychology at Murdoch is competitive and the number of available places is limited by various factors, including our capacity to offer supervision to students. Furthermore, because the course is professionally accredited, we need to comply with APAC regulations when deciding whom we admit to the course. To be eligible, students need to have completed an APAC-accredited undergraduate qualification in Psychology within the last 10 years. Additionally, they need to have a Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 2 (credit) in their undergraduate psychology units. The process we use at Murdoch for calculating GPA is as follows: each undergraduate psychology unit on a student’s transcript is allocated points. A high distinction result (80%+) receives 4 points, a distinction (70-79%) 3 points, a credit (60-69%) 2 points, a pass (50-59%) 1 point, and a fail (...
