1. Introduction

INTRODUCTION In this laboratory study, a geological map is one which shows in the first place, the occurrence and distribution of the rocks at the surface of the ground. Conventional sign may show certain facts of observation about them. The geological map allows the geological structure of the country to be inferred.

2. Objectives & Learning Outcomes

OBJECTIVE(S) To plot the contour and determine the horizontal beddings.

LEARNING OUTCOME At the end of the laboratory activities, we are able to: i. Plot the contour from the given geological map. ii. Determine the horizontal bedding and layer sequences of rock. iii. Work in a group to produce technical report.

3. Procedure / Equipment / Methodology / Theory

APPARATUS i. Geological Map 1 ii. Graph Paper/ Drawing Paper A4 iii. Ruler iv. Pencils v. Color Pencils

PROCEDURE i. ii. iii. iv. v. vi. vii.

The cross-section is plot with the horizontal and vertical scales accordingly to the scale of the geological map on a piece of graph paper or blank sheet. Figure 1 is referred. To improve visibility of the profile, the vertical scale is normally exaggerated. A line to join the line of cross-section on the map, says A –B is drew. The points of intersection is marked using a blank piece of paper accordingly between the lines with the contours respective to its heights. The points is transferred to the cross-section profile respective to the heights of the contours. The points is joined to form the profile of the ground elevation.

4. Results & Discussion

Graph (Cross section A-B)

DISCUSSION  Different colors and outcrop are used in the map to make it easier to differentiate rock type:1. Yellow: Sandstone 2. Orange: Shale 3. Blue: Limestone 4. Brown: Clay/Marl 5. Green: Conglomerate  Cross section of the map can be achieve by drawing a line (A-B) from one end to another on the map which we then transfer its data into a graph.  From plotting a graph derive from cross section of the map, we can determine horizontal beddings and its rock type as well as the rocks’ age.  The graph helps us to see the ground elevation of the map, so that it is easier to imagine the actual terrain instead of looking at it from the plane view with contour lines as a guide.

5. Conclusion

CONCLUSION From this experiment, we are able determine the contour and the horizontal beddings of the given geological map. We have successfully followed the procedure and achieve the objective, so we can conclude that from geological maps we can identify rocks on the ground surface (youngest rocks) as well as older rocks plus the elevation that are represented by the contour lines. Incidentally, we can also conclude that the more crowded the contour lines, the more steep the terrain.
