2 Glory- Black regiment in Civil war
Glory is a film that depicts the role of black soldiers in the 54th regiment during the civil war. The black soldiers served under Colonel Robert Shaw, who led them through the battle of Antietam. At the time, the government saw blacks as inferior with no right to own rifles and lacking the necessary skills to serve in the war. The main reason for the blacks fighting was mainly for their freedom and also for their country. In the film, the injustice and racism faced by African Americans are well portrayed despite their desire to fight.
The 54th regiment was the first to entirely comprise of black men who lacked education, knowledge, and supplies compared to the white men. This was the doing of the quartermaster who also paid the black men lower wages than the whites. As their leader, Colonel Shaw had to train the black men on how to fight, ways of war, and military conduct to give them some fighting chance during the war. After they were trained, the 54th regiment was deployed in South Carolina, where they got their first victory in battle.
The 54th regiment also went to battle at James Island, where they lost most of their men, including Colonel Shaw, who was shot and died while holding the flag. They then entered combat at Ft. Wagner in Charleston despite knowing how much fatalities would be experienced before winning the war. They were later joined by the white troops but lost the battle after suffering many causalities. Though they lost the battle at Ft. Wagner, it showed that the black men were willing and capable of fighting. Hence, the black men became famous for their willingness to sacrifice themselves during combat, which led them to be accepted as worthy
