Teresita Gonzalez Kin 360 12 May, 2018 Concussion Film Summary The film Concussion, starring Will Smith is about a doctor that attempts to go against the National Football League and bring attention to his research on brain injuries that professional football players acquire. The same way that this brought more attention to brain degeneration and concussions in professional sports, specifically football, in the film, I believe it also brought that attention to the illness in real life. The film starts out by giving a little bit of a background on a former Pittsburgh Steelers player that went from being a very successful and dominant athlete, to a retired homeless person. Before his death, he had an interaction with another football player and he shares that he was starting to not recognize himself or his actions, and that he also felt like he was losing his memory. The former Pittsburgh Steelers player then dies at age fifty due to a heart attack, and the main character (Will Smith) is assigned to deal with his autopsy. Dr. Omalu is dumbfounded that a former professional athlete that is healthy could have died at such a young age. After reviewing all of his findings, he discovers that his brain had a lot of damage done to it. He determines that the severe damage his brain had was a result of all of the repeated hits he took during his whole football career. Dr. Omalu is eager to present his findings to the NFL and it’s committee to bring attention to this disease, but they have someone else do the presentation in his place and do not display the correct information. Dr. Omalu does not back down and is determined to bring attention to his findings so he can educate more people on it, but is threatened to be sent to jail. Towards the end of the movie, another player dies and in his suicide note, he explains that the doctor was right about his findings. They also find brain damage due to repeated blows to be the cause of his illness. Dr. Omalu is then allowed to hold conferences to inform others on the risks of playing football, which then forces the NFL to take preventative measures to make sure they are taking better care of their athletes and they do not suffer brain damage like previous athletes. The NFL is also then sued by players because they failed to warn them of the severity of the risks there was of playing football. This film gave me plenty of insight on how severe some brain damage can be, and some of the negative side effects that people can suffer from it. It also made me aware of how often it happens to football players because of the repeated blows to the head which is something that I had never thought about before....
