Description

Name: Vanessa Margaret A. Simo Title of Film: That sugar film Genre: documentary/drama Introduction Filmmaker Damon Gameau documents the effects of eating supposedly healthy foods that contain high amounts of sugar.

Plot Synopsis The film follows Gameau's experiment on himself, changing from his normal diet containing no refined sugar to a 'health-conscious' diet low in fat but high in sugar, equivalent to 160 grams (40 tsp) of sugar per day. As a result, Gameau gained weight, grew lethargic, and developed fatty liver disease. The sugar diet was selected such that his calorie intake was not increased from his normal diet.Interviews with experts attribute this change to the high level of sugar he was ingesting, and in particular suggest that fructose may be the main culprit. It is suggested that artificial sweeteners may be no better. The viewers are introduced to the "bliss point", a term coined in the 1960s which applies here to the amount of sugar you can add to a food to make it optimally desirable. Adding more sugar beyond the "bliss point" leads to significant drop in desirability. Following the experiment, he returned to his previous diet, and the ill effects were largely and quickly reversed. Themes Fast-paced, entertaining and informative, “That Sugar Film” is a cautionary tale about the hidden sugar content in everyday food products, the health problems that high sugar consumption creates, and the food industry’s deliberate efforts to obfuscate the sugar content of various products as well as the ingredient’s addictive power. With its peppy, pop style, complete with silly, colorful special effects and animation, this documentary should prove accessible to school-age viewers, who might profit the most from its frank information about sugar’s effect on their minds and bodies. Although ancillary biz is likely to outweigh theatrical, overall returns should be, er, sweet.

Visual Elements Damon presents the sugar message in such an entertaining visual way, rather than lecturing or finger-wagging. I especially love his rap at the end. But seriously, we need to help it gain as much attention as we possibly can. That Sugar Film could be the one that really gets the public to thinking differently and everyone reading those darn food labels. Conclusion Be wary of foods that claim to be healthy (natural, low-fat, lite, etc) as they can be packed full of sugar and may be the reason why you’re struggling to lose weight or manage your health. Limiting your sugar intake could be the answer to your health woes. 1. As a culture, we eat far too much processed food and as a result our overall sugar intake is too high. We could all do with being smarter about our food choices and eat foods closer to nature and less manufactured. 2. A lot of the sugar we do eat is ‘hidden’ in foods and a lot of the time we don’t realise it’s there. For example, one tablespoon of tomato sauce contains one teaspoon of sugar. If you look at the ingredients of many processed foods, sugar (using a range of different terms and names) is often one of the top three ingredients. 3. High sugar foods are easy to overeat and often leave us wanting more. The food industry has done a good job of making our food taste amazing. We need to be much more mindful

with our food choices and strike a better balance with our foods. Seeking professional help from a nutritionist or dietitian is the best way forward....
