Description

Cinderella Film Review I knew I wanted to write a film review for my Rhetoric-in-Practice Project because I personally like to read reviews from films, television shows, beauty products, or anything that I consume in my life. Reviews serve as a way to articulate an individual’s opinion without being incorrect because it is based on self-thoughts or knowledge. The difficult part for me was trying to figure out where exactly I wanted my review to appear. Since we are learning about fairytales in WR39B, I immediately thought about the new Cinderella movie that was released in 2015. My next step was to research where exactly movie reviews appeared and how were they written. Professor Way advised me to look into the online magazine Variety and after looking through various samples, I decided to include my film review of Cinderella in Variety magazine and explore the technical elements such as character development, genre conventions, costume design, set design, musicality, to help make the film unique from the original tale. The audience that my review is aimed to appeal is for people who are involved within the film industry or readers who are admirers of Disney and Cinderella. It’s a review that will guide the readers to watch the movie, to develop a project from it based on the production, and movie critics. I began by writing a short summary of the film and identifying the Cinderella elements that are seen as well as the new twist that the movie adds. Each body paragraph contained a brief explanation of each point I had to make of the film such as Cinderella conventions, comparison to original 1950s film, character development, music, costume and set design. The purpose of my RIP is to comment on how well the film was produced with technical elements in the film industry to produce a successful, highly ranked, top box office film. My purpose as an author of Variety magazine is to persuade my audience to want to watch the movie and I try to achieve it by using captivating language and focus on the strengths of the film.

What made me motivated to write the review with enthusiasm is the message that I received from the film, which was to “be seen as we truly are” and “have courage, be kind”. I found it more realistic to today’s society and based on that message I wanted to demonstrate how well director Brangh portrayed it with throughout the movie. Using technical elements of the film, I wanted to show how it compliments the intended message Branagh, even though the reader can still feel the some similarities from the original film. I read various reviews from Variety to get the sense of the language, formatting, and what specific things I needed to mention in a review appearing in Varitety Magazine. I also watched video interviews of Branagh, Lily James and Sandy Powells to understand their goals for the movie. In particularly there was a review of the movie Mocking Jay that was released and I was inspired by their style because it demonstrated the development throughout the series and that is what I wanted to do with Cinderella, show the evolvement of the tale to the newest version. I am proud of my work because I was challenged to create a project that at first I was not familiar but I tried my best to articulate. What I struggled with the most was making an almost exact replica of how the Varitey Magazine would appear, I used a program to design a similar layout. As for the writing process, I struggled to refrain from my review to sound as a rhetorical analysis essay, which was hard because that is what I have always done in writing classes.

Bibliography Chang, Justin. “Film Review: Extraordinary Tales”. Variety. Michelle Sobrino. October 25, 2015. Online. http://variety.com/2015/film/reviews/extraordinary-tales-review-1201626112/ I used Chang’s review because the film was inspired by the writing of Edgar Allen Poe and turned into a movie in today's society.

Chang, Justin. “Film Review: The Good Dinosaur”. Variety. Michelle Sobrino. November 13, 2015. Online. http://variety.com/2015/film/reviews/the-good-dinosaur-review-1201639759/ The review emphasizes on the journey of the characters and focuses on the visual components.

Online. http://variety.com/2015/film/reviews/the-hunger-gamesmockingjay-part-2-film-review-1201632920/ I wanted to use the review of the film Hunger Games as guidance to my review because it is a series and there is a development throughout the movies. I wanted to see how Debruge explained it, in order for me to see how to explain the evolvement of Cinderella conventions.

McCarthy, Kevin. “ James, Madden, and Branagh explain their own experience and the goals they had to achieve. I wanted to see what Branagh wanted to accomplish and how he did it.

Variety. “Variety Artisians: Sandy Powell and the Costumes of Cinderella”. Online video clip. YouTube. YouTube, 13 March 2015. Web. 25 November 2015. The video gave me a deeper insight of what inspired Powell and how she managed to bring her imaginations to life....
