Description

COBQUAL K36 Deepwater Horizon: Film Review Poor quality management does not only translate to the loss of the quality of a product or service or the loss of profit and customers but it can also translate to life treating situations that will ultimately result in casualties. Deepwater Horizon is a 2016 disaster film based on a real-life event last April 20, 2010, known as the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico. It is one of the largest marine oil spill in the world and one of the largest environmental disaster in the history of the United States. Out of the 126 people on board, the explosion caused the death of 11 workers and 17 people injured. The film focused on the negligence of the managers Donald Vidrine and Robert Kaluza. The explosion could have been prevented if it weren’t for the poor leadership and management skills of the managers. At the beginning of the film, the gas alarms, sensors, and other smoke detectors were not functioning and no one bothered to fix them right at the start. Afterward, the workers who were in charge of the test were sent home early both by Donald and Robert. Despite being sent home the workers should’ve known the possibilities and accidents that can happen if they weren’t able to finish their job. In an organization, there should be an engagement of people. Managers should practice open discussion and sharing of knowledge because as employees they also have the responsibility to know the risks and problems they can face if the tests weren’t finished and shouldn’t be ashamed to voice out their opinions to their bosses or managers. The relationship between the managers, heads, and workers weren’t efficient. As simple as miscommunication can result in fatal events. Evidence-based decision-making was also violated because even after seeing the data they were able to gather after doing tests on the machines they still made the wrong decision to go on with a second negative test. This is why decision making is such an important and hard thing to do because it can make or break any situation. Most of the time businesses and large corporations often forget about the quality their company produces because the focus always ends up on the profit they make. As managers, they failed to oversee the things that could have to happen ed and problems they may encounter. Overall, the movie made me see the benefits of having a good management team and the importance of having good quality management principles. Having our manufacturing business problems like what occurred in the movie can also take place in our business. If our machines aren’t properly checked or our electricity isn’t wired properly or the working places aren’t properly sanitized a lot of problems can occur. As a future business owner, I am going to be responsible for the lives of my workers and employees and responsible to help preserve the environment....
