Lexi Kalamaris Glory Road: Race Issues Movie Review The movie, “Glory Road” takes place during the period of the Civil Rights Movement in El Paso, Texas. It is based on the Texas Western College coach Don Haskins and his partner, Jerry Armstrong, who would like to recruit players of various races. The two of these men eventually travel across the country searching for players for his team. Haskins and Armstrong eventually find a team with seven black athletes and five white athletes that will ultimately go on to winning nearly every game. One historical aspect of the movie I had not known before watching, is the standards people of this time had for the game of basketball and who was acceptable to play. As shown in the film, many people had a problem with the idea of having a majority black team. The implied rule suggesting only one black player was to be played at a home event for example. Along with the standards of basketball at the time, the repercussions of obtaining this integrated team was something I was unaware of before watching the movie. The more successful the team performed, the more racial hatred they encountered. Don Haskin’s family was threatened, a player was beaten up in a restroom while on the road, and the entire motel rooms the team stayed vacant in were destroyed in East Texas. The movie, “Glory Road,” was a movie about a college coach with a dream to succeed. Haskins wanted to win and he wanted players of any background to help him do it. This movie depicts an inspiring story about a man with a dream and how he and his team overcome extreme hardships. For me, watching this movie was surreal, unsettling, yet admirable. It takes a lot of courage to do what these men accomplished, considering the circumstances they were in at that time. In addition, I enjoyed being part of the experience and seeing a glimpse into what sport looked like during these times.
