Paths of Glory (1957)

The movie was directed by Stanley Kubrick and casted by Kirk Douglas, Adolphe Menjou, Ralph Meeker and other actors. The headquarters of Col. Dax was placed in a damaged building, that looks like it was hit by bombs. Its like that because it was set in the old castle of Schleissheim, opposing the 18th century castle. During WWII the factories near Schleissheim were affected by the bombing. Some bombs fell on the old castle, which caused the heavy damage. As a result, the headquarters were not set up by the film crew, they were damaged in war. In "Paths of Glory" war is influenced with power. This film about a true event that happened in World War I combines the idea that class differences are far more important than nationwide differences with the soldiers being regarded as materials in war, and the hands of generals who play at war as if it was a game of chess. The scene that caught my attention was the ending scene where a German lady debut on stage to sing for all the soldiers and entertain them. This scene portrays the full human being’s experience. The men in this scene have been devastated emotionally, mentally, and physically by war. The cruelty of war has completely corrupted them and turned them into monsters that are only concerned with survival and their monstrous desires. This is shown when the men were staring at this woman who is terrified by their capacity. Then, when they hear the lady singing, without even understanding the words, they are reminded of their humanity and the costs of war. Suddenly they are saved and redeemed by her and the melody of the song. They are filled with a

certain salvation that can only be experienced by someone that has been forced to participate in a war to survive. Suddenly they become aware that sometimes the ones that have been killed in action are the fortunate ones and the true fatalities are the ones that survive it.
