Social Problem: Abortion in Canada

Abortion in Canada is a social problem, bring division and polarization among Canadians; there is two groups those are in favor of women right to chose called ProChoice and those who are against it Pro-Life. Pro life claims this issue is not about remove guaranties to all women is about take another human being life, they claim that this treatment to another being is a demonstration of inequity. Pro-Choice said the view of pro-Life is oppressive to all women because and their against the basic right of women to the ownership to their own bodies and their own decisions; also considers that religion is oppressive and do not consider woman right of choose. On Going Self-Analysis I have tried to find for my research the most accurate sources of information, through Medical academic papers – University of Toronto research papers – Newspapers – Pro and in Favor of abortion Canadian Organizations. My personal view of this social problem is like I express in other opportunities through this course is I am not against to bring an innocent baby to this world; I am against of oppression, inequity and most of all the lost of freedom, everyone in this world have the right to chose freely what they want to do in their life. Dominant Ideologies/Discourses In 1869 abortion in Canada was illegal like in any the other country in the world, in 1879 a famous trial in the Canada was the abortion case of Dr. Emily Stowe one of the first female doctors in Canada, Emily was condemn to jail for the death of a women who required the illegal abortion service from Doctor Stowe; abortion in those days were poorly about safety and without economical funds enough to get the right medical

instrumentation. Around 1960 there some instances in Ontario that abortion was ‘’legal’’ but the dead of several women in 1967 make Prime minister Pierre Trudeau reject the current bill 251 and reject any abortive procedure only those, when the mother health was in severe risk were allowed in those years, for Patriarchal social structure it was unthinkable that women chose an abortion it was our duty as female bring babies to this world, women wishes never were taken under consideration. Around late sixties and 1973 Doctor Henry Morgentaler start to appeal to Supreme Court to ask reconsideration about the abortion law; several trial against Morgentaler and his refusal to stop doing this procedures end with Henry in prison. By social petition Morgentaler is set free and the judge fail against Catholic and Conservative party, and since then abortion is legal in Canada. Structures of Power In the past social lower income people, suffered from discrimination and condemn when they perform an abortion, they were judged, criticized and sometimes put in prison; but high social income no when a daughter of someone with economical resources had an unwanted fetus they take her to the clinic and perform the code word for abortion APPENDICITIS.

Proposed Solutions

Social and Individual Change Women should be treated with respect. As citizens we have with equal rights and responsibilities; women is the only one should decide in her own body, because is that woman who will suffer an incredible change in her life, in that will change her forever, and her decision should be value and respected. I am proud to follow this rule, respect for others freedom. I believe that your rights end, when other person rights start; and education and understanding are the real key to live in a equalitarian society. Moving forward: Ongoing Learning My vision about this social problem never has change, now is more richer. I have now a better understanding about the laws that change a country’s vision, also the people who fought for the basic rights of others, whose beliefs allow women to have something should never be question in the first place, her voice as an individual. What I have learned in this course would be in my mind always. Global Citizenship Book, allow me to develop knowledge of social issues that sometimes people just prefer not to talk about. The social problem I have chose for my research is one of many social issues that we as society should try to fix, to achieve a more balance society; respect should be given to every individual on this planet no matter social income, genre, sexual orientation, religion or ethnicity. Respect and education should be our main key to solve inequity and Social Problems....
